Synopsis
THE WILD ONE had been banned in the UK eleven years earlier for fear of being a bad influence on the young, but THE LEATHER BOYS presents a similar portrait of juvenile delinquency, this time with more female participation. Sidney J. Furie (THE IPCRESS FILE) directs Rita Tushingham (A TASTE OF HONEY & THE KNACK) as Dot, biker companion to Reggie (Colin Campbell). After being forced to keep their romance a secret, they decide to wed. As young delinquents, however, they are unable to keep faithful to one another, and their relationship turns destructive. Uncharacteristically bleak for the time and unwilling to conform to the sexual mores of their era, THE LEATHER BOYS is an entertaining look at youth gone wild.
Customer Reviews
Excellent film, but!
This is a classic from the 1960s in the true British tradition and the acting is outstanding.
However, I viewed the new release, and there appears to have been no restoration done whatsoever - it jumps, it flickers. And there are no extras whatsoever. Surely a word or two with the stars would not have been asking too much.
An excellent film, but!!!!!!!
Frustrating
This is a minor gem of a kitchen sink drama, with some some great performances and some location sequences that will get nostalgia buffs very steamed up - Butlins in Bognor and the old Ace Café!
However, it's very badly served indeed by this release. To start with, it's a fairly duff print, which can't necessarily be helped, but is still annoying. Much more seriously, the box copy claims that the film is presented in widescreen, when in fact it's letterboxed 4:3 - which means that widescreen TV owners can choose between either watching a minuscule (around 1/3 size) picture floating in the middle of the screen, or zooming in, which degrades the image so badly as to render it pretty much unwatchable. The picture resolution is so low and the transfer so poor that on LCD screens many scenes simply dissolve into a riot of pixellation. Wait for it to turn up on TV instead.
Great Film - Terrible DVD
A great kitchen sink social drama from the early sixties - but - this must be about the worst dvd transfer i have ever seen! Some scenes were so pixelated you can hardly make out the faces. The makers of this dvd should be ashamed to charge such a price for such a shoddy piece of work.
A great british film ruined!
