Matinee idol but so much more
A seven-movie boxed set containing a good cross-section of Bogarde's earlier work, mostly from his contract years with Rank, and before he became the darling of continental art-house cinema. Some are very early classics (The Blue Lamp, The Spanish Gardener), some are from his long association with Joseph Losey who was in the UK during the USA blacklisting era and sometimes directing under an assumed name. Accident has dated quite badly, and now appears pretentious, with the normally reliable Stanley Baker glaringly miscast as a university don. Victim is still a magnificent piece of cinema, the stand-out dvd in the box, and the first mainstream film to treat homosexuality seriously, with a risky role for Bogarde as a blackmailed closet-gay lawyer, as he was not "out" at the time, homosexuality was illegal, and the Wolfenden Report was still in the future. The Servant shows his dark side to great effect, with gay undertones which perhaps the viewing public did not pick up on at the time.
There's also a revealing interview with Bogarde as a bonus. The Sleeping Tiger was never a good film, with risible plotting, and time has not improved it - it's one of the studio pot-boilers he derides in the interview, from the time when he says he was offered nothing but young tearaway roles. But overall, a worthwhile box and recommended.

Review of Dirk Bogarde - Screen Icons Collection
I think anyone who is a fan of Dirk Bogarde would really enjoy this box set. It is a very good collection of some of his finest films at a very competitive price. These films are rarely aired on TV so that is another good reason to purchase this item.
The idea was good
It was a good idea indeed to collect some films starring Dirk Bogarde. He was in my eyes an excellent, sensitive actor that could convey feelings and emotions in a special way. This collection includes seven films, most of them antological: The Blue Lamp, Hunted, The Sleeping Tiger, The Spanish Gardener, Victim, Accident, and that masterpiece called The Servant.
The price for this collection was low, but I think at a cost. There are no texts in these films at all, which make it difficult and extremely irritating to understand the dialogues for those of us who do not have English as mother tongue. I would not expect them to be translated to several languages, but simply add English text for the hearing impaired? I personally would gladly have paid more for this collection, if texts had been included. The sound is not all that great either, but it could be our computer's fault (I doubt it).
Having said this, I would like to add that the choice of films has been quite good.
