Dated Gentle Humour
Arthur Lowe is best known for Dads Army one of the best sit coms of all time.
It is rare to see him in anything else so this series comes as an interesting change to his many fans.
Set in the early nineteen fifties he plays an elderly Irish Catholic priest who is at war with his neighbour (a bookmaker and nightclub owner) and his housekeeper. Needless to say he is realy very found of them both.
He also struggles to control his curate and lives in fear of the head of the local convent. AS his curate says of him 'He is the proundest man I ever met and also the humblest'
The humour is gentile and dated but still for the most part funny. In one or two episodes the racial sterotyping would not be acceptable today. However if you want to see humour that is not based on swearing, farting and loutish conduct and Arthur Lowe in an all to rare role with is not Captain Mannering then this is for you.
Father Ted...........
Arthur Lowe is always great value, that goes without saying. This series is a lot more obscure than Dad's Army but still shows off Arthur's comedy talents wonderfully. The most interesting thing about this show is how similar the concept is to Father Ted. Of course it's not as bizarre or manic but it's hard to imagine that the writers of the later show didn't take some inspiration from 'Bless Me Father'.
All in all this is another of those little remembered British comedies from the 70's that deserves to be seen again
