Editorial Reviews
CD Description
Seventh studio album, their first in seven years, from the unashamedly retro blues-rockers who have sold an astonishing20 million albums worldwide since they formed in Georgia nearly a quarter century ago. Now featuring ex-North Mississippi Allstar Luther Dickinson on guitar, the album sticks resolutely with an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" aesthetic and as such is chock-full of the rollicking downhome anthems the boys have made their own.
Customer Reviews
Hard to know how to judge it....
I find it really hard to commit to an opinion about this album. There is a distinct difference between the opinion as a long term Crowes fan, and that of judging it on its own merit.
As a staunch BC's fan I would judge it against their other work adding a star simply for loyalty. But as an objective listener I'd knock off a star right away because..... well as much as it pains me to say it, the album just isn't that good.
Ultimately though a colleague summed it up quite well. A poor album from the Black Crowes is still going to be much better than what most current bands put out when on form.
You can hear it is the Black Crowes without a doubt, but they are in a much, much different place than they were 15 years ago. The raging fires that spurred The Southern Harmony and some of the songs on Amorica have given way to a cool blue burning flame. Not blandness by any means, it is simply that the whole album has that laid back introspective Neil Young vibe that showed itself on a large bulk of Amorica and Chris Robinson's solo records. You keep waiting for the tone and pace to suddenly pick up and them break into something a little more raucous other than the odd chorus, but it never really does. Which is a pity. Or is it simply that they are in that different place these days?! You see my quandary?!
Either way though, I can't escape the one glaring fact that a couple of the tracks grated on my nerves like nails down a blackboard. `Walk Believer Walk' is just a mish mash of a song and sounds so terrible I can't stand to listen to it, and I don't ever recall thinking that of a Crowes track in 19 years of listening.
It's easy to get nostalgic and wish things were still the same, but after seeing the effect Marc Ford had after the reform in 2005 and the Filmore performances you can't help but notice his absence. He lit a fire under Rich Robinson and this album needed some petrol fuelled infernos.
It still sounds good though. They are really good at that laid back vibe without a doubt and the more I listen the more it all grows on me. The critic in me knows it should get three stars, but the Crowes disciple in me gives it four stars. And I nailed those Crowes colours to the mast many, many years ago and I'm not ripping them down yet!
Something to 'crow' about
I don't listen to enough Black Crowes even though I own all their studio albums. This is more to do with the musical tastes of my household than my own preferences. Having heard this new offering, I have vowed to indulge myself more often.
Many critics suggest that the Crowes offer nothing original and are pale imitations of the Stones. Well I bet Jagger wished he had a voice like Chris Robinson! Yes their rock riff laden music does have a Stones feel about it at times but I would view their musical style as sitting closer to the old blues and soul era of the 60's. I can imagine that this is what Otis Redding would be singing if he were alive and kicking today.
Having studied the other reviews of this album, a lot of fans seem to be beating themselves up over whether it is really any good or whether their judgement is that of biased long term fans. Well, having come to this fairly fresh from not having listened to them for a while, I can confirm that this is a very good album. I can't imagine that they will ever top 'Southern Harmony' - they were young and at their peak - but this probably has more immediate appeal than any of their albums for many a long time.
It's often a mistake to do a review before a few listens, but the opener 'Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution' is a good old fashioned stomping rocker as is 'God's Got It'. The only track I haven't yet become attached to is 'There's Gold In Them Hills' - a sort of nothing song. All the others are of a high standard with other stand outs being 'Wee who see the deep', 'Movin on Down the Line' and 'Wounded Bird'.
I agree with others that the pace is fairly slow but for me this doesn't matter. It doesn't detract from a very interesting album. Occasionally, the Crowes can sound a bit messy, at other times very focussed. However, you'de be hard pressed to listened to today's newer and often highly competent bands and name them. Was that Fountains of Wayne or The Hoosiers or The Coral or Tonic or Train or Vertical Horizon or Maroon 5 or Five for Fighting or Hoobastank or Goo Goo Dolls etc etc?? There is never any doubt that when you listen to the Crowes, that's who it is.
So, Crowes fans, stop beating yourself up, just sit back and enjoy an album which, although not their best ever, is really very good.
been ages but well worth the wait
this new album has been well worth the wait and no doubtfuly hit you from all sides with its retro rock riffs and rolling stone like singing which has earned the Black Crowes nearly 20 million album sales and since the priority to make another big selling album is no longer important since bands these days would rather make a superb album without having to rush it into the charts and come back looking all dissappointed.
