Customer Reviews

All grown up!4
When this was first released a number of fans were not too pleased,You see everybody had thought the mighty Grand Funk had finished. but no Mark and Don, had got the bug again only Mel, original bassist and Craig ( now with Bob Seger) didnt want to rejoin. So in comes Dennis Bellinger on bass and the group are back sort of. but one major thing was overlooked Grand Funk had grown up. This in its own right is a very good album the 1st four tracks are rocky smart and tight, the guitar sound is straight off their last album `Good Singin` and suits this style, side two starts with a punchy hot version of the Animals `we gotta get out of this place` followed by a few softer songs. all in all Im happy to listen and let the boys grow old gracefully!.

BEST AVOIDED 1
In July 1981 GFR reformed and produced 'Grand Funk Lives' to prove it.

Good Times has a few power chords to help it along and some good GFR energy in the overall mix. Mark Farner puts a strong vocal down to give the album a good opener.

Queen Bee is a little strange but it has pace and is tightly arranged.

Testify is the big one. A stompin' beat with shriek fest Farner vocals all over it. Game on!

Can't Be With You Tonight is the pop song. Soft and eminently forgettable.

No Reason Why picks up the pace and tries to rock it up. Ok but nothing special.

We Gotta Get Out Of This Place is a cover version that works well. A simple, paired down riff within a tight, well delivered arrangement.

Y.O.U. is more pop. Easily done, by all accounts. Easily forgotten.

Stuck In The Middle is even worse. Why bother? Dreadful.

Greed of Man is back in the rock vein (slightly) but a bit cumbersome overall.

Wait For Me is ok. Or is it dreadful? Slow wailing beginning. Medium pace end. Dreadful is probably the word.

Best tracks : Good Times, Testify

Best left alone : Can't Be With You Tonight, Y.O.U., Stuck In The Middle, Wait For Me.

This album has an AOR feel to it with some power (chords) and poor pop songs. Bass duties are taken on by someone who isn't Mel Schacher. A few winners in a basket of low quality goods. Not their finest hour by some margin. Best left.
