Smokin' showmanship5
Wow, when I was watching this DVD, I had to pinch myself that it actually existed. Rarely are soul fans treated to rare clips of this quality. Sam & Dave's showmanship has to be seen to be believed, they just work off each other so well and considering they allegedly did not practice their onstage movements, they just seem to spontaneously mirror each other. I'm more used to seeing clips of them backed by Booker T and The M.G.'s, the band they recorded all their studio material with, I wouldn't want to say anything bad about the M.G.'s as I think they are great but the band on most of the clips here (the Sam & Dave Orchestra) I think are actually better! I counted 17 people onstage at one point and with tightly organised dance steps, they don't just sound good, they look good too. The main feature runs at 1hr 45mins and has short interviews and full length clips. Clips have been impressively cleaned up and the picture and sound quality in general is good. Fantastic DVD.

Some great stuff but...4
OK, this DVD isn't perfect but it's a small miracle that it exists at all. There is some terrific footage that shows just why Sam and Dave were known as the Sultans of Sweat. The early tracks with the MGs are priceless, particularly the Hammersmith Odeon footage of Hold On, I'm Comin' from 1967 (clumsy edit apart) and Soothe Me from the Norway show in the same year. There are also fine versions of You Don't Know Like I Know and When Something Is Wrong With My Baby. Soul Man receives two treatments: a German TV show from 1967 and a post-Blues Brothers Saturday Night Live from 1980, by which time Dave Prater's voice was sadly not what it had been. There's quite a bit of filler: two Sam & Dave Orchestra tracks, two versions of That Lucky Old Sun (one sandwiched between slices of Soul Sister Brown Sugar!) and a pointless take on the Walker Brothers' Make It Easy On Yourself. Of interest to dedicated followers of fashion may be the Double Dynamite wardrobe, which evolves in a few short years from sharp mohair suits to dazzling DayGlo creations, most with outrageous oversized lapels. Overall, though, a very respectable overview of a seminal soul act that prompts the question: will we ever see the full Stax/Volt Hammersmith Odeon concert? The DVD of the Norway show is good, but the London gig was clearly on a whole different level.
