Video Description
Diego lives in an ultra-conservative suburb of East LA, and is in an unhappy relationship with his closeted estate agent boyfriend Pablo. The pair finally decide to split after Diego has had enough of playing a Mexican immigrant in Pablo's fetish games, only for Pablo to woo Diego's spoilt and bratty Aunt Bianca (a hilarious turn from Gladys Jimenez, star of camp classic `Illegal Aliens'). As it happens, its the perfect time to be single, and out, in East LA, as the neighbourhood suddenly makes a name for itself as the property hot spot for young gay men, and soon Diego's eyes start to roam. When the dashing Wes and his outrageous boyfriend Jon move in next door, tensions start to grow. Jon is petrified by the Hispanic locale and makes ludicrous claims about his impending gay-bashing. Wes, meanwhile, falls head over heels for neighbour Diego. Hilarious, feel-good and scorchingly hot from start to finish, East Side Story tells an uplifting tale about loving thy neighbour... and not getting caught!

DVD Extras: Director's and cast & crew Commentary / Deleted Scenes / English Subtitles for hard of hearing

East Side Story4
East Side Story [2006]
This is a feel-good movie about a Mexican man (Diego) who lives and works for his grandmother in the Mexican area of LA. He is in a non-relationship with a Mexican real estate broker (Pablo), who is in denial about being gay.
The area in which he lives is becoming fashionable with gays, and it is when a white couple move in over the road that the story really starts up.
The development of the story between the older of the two new neighbours (Wes) and Diego is played out against Wes's boyfriend increasing jealousy, Diego's attempts to leave LA to open a Mexican restaurant in Phoenix, and the return of his aunt from Europe ("I am still on Monaco time").
It's a well-balanced movie and although the outcome is not certain until the end, everything works out.

Amusing distraction5
A creative and intriguing look at live in East LA as the name suggests - it opens with what can only be described as a mouth-watering twist. It rapidly develops into a great tale about a young gay man of Latin origin trying to cope with his sexuality and trying to build a life with a significant other.

The main character is well etched out and well-acted - but there are some show stealing moments from supporting casstmates - his over the top aunt, the Hispani, narrowminded, dog-walking, gayhating chef and the bigotted overly camp gay neighbour!

Defo worth repeated viewings.
Cheers

Nice, funny romance...4
Yes - nice, funny romance and well acted too, especially by Rene Alvarado playing the main character Diego, 'muy simpático'...
Once Diego stops doing what everybody else wants and starts to make some decisions of his own, things get moving.

I'll watch it again
