Is There anyone alive out there?
Recorded in 1993 in Verona Italy, this recording has been doing the rounds in the collectors circuit for a few years and has now surfaced in this Netherlands release, so not what you'd call an official album. That saying the overall sound is OK, I'm not sure of the origins of the recording but it sounds like either a radio broadcast or a very good soundboard recording. Either way it's OK. Recorded during a pivotal time for Springsteen, he had sacked the E-Street band and struck out with the support of some very good session players including a very strong group of backing singers. The two disc set includes a number of comparatively unusual tracks, cover versions and major reworkings of Springsteen classics. Born in the USA is particulalry interesting. Bruce's despairing vocals are clearly at odds with the riff giving a truer feel to the songs meaning and almost a protest against the misuse of the song as a gung ho anthem. Who'll Stop the Rain and Rocking All Over the World are both covers of John Fogerty numbers, The latter of which is well known to European fans thanks to Status Quo's cover. Light of Day is strong and Thunder Road is an interesting take on the song much less bombastic and triumphant than the E-Street version. Souls of the Departed is a hard rocker and even Born to Run gets a face lift. As I said this was recorded at a time when Springsteen himself seemed unsure of his future. He wanted to branch out on his own and explore new ideas which couldn't be covered within the confines of the E-Street set up, but even he couldn't deny his past although at times he tied to reinterpret what had gone before. This is a worthy addition to any Springsteen collection but maybe not for the casual fan.

the recording is ok, but i think that this is a kind of bootleg. i was at the concert, and i remember that Bruce was not phisically ok. his voice was weak and from time to time he had to cough, the weather was really wet and it was raining. although this, it was a good concert, but not perfect. the Great White Boss had just begun the downward phase of his career (which in my opinion is going on again). if i remember well, this is not the complete concert, it's too short. but it's very cheap....
