The Béla Tarr Collection Damnation Werckmeister Harmonies The Man From London The extraordinary Hungarian director Béla Tarr is one of the world s most original and acclaimed contemporary filmmakers. In a body of work concerned with metaphysical explorations of the human condition, he has created an uncompromising, innovative and utterly engrossing cinematic world. Damnation (Kárhozat) In a small Hungarian town lives Karrer, a listless and brooding man who has almost completely withdrawn from the world, but for an obsession with a singer in the bar he frequents. Tarr s immaculately photographed and composed film is about eternal conflict: the centuries-old struggle between barbarism and civilization. One of the few genuinely visionary filmmakers Gus Van Sant Hungary 1987 120 mins approx Hungarian with English subtitles Werckmeister Harmonies (Werckmeister Harmoníak) The population of a desolate provincial town on the Hungarian plain await the arrival of a circus that features the stuffed carcass of a whale and a mysterious Prince. Its appearance disturbs the order of the populace, unleashing a torrent of violence and beauty. An out and out masterpiece The Independent on Sunday Hungary 2000 145 mins approx Hungarian with English subtitles The Man From London (A Londoni Férfi) When a withdrawn and reclusive railway signalman witnesses a murder, his life is transformed and he is forced to confront issues of morality, sin, punishment and the line between innocence and complicity. Customer Reviews

Magnificent Movie Maker5
Bela Tarr has become one of my all time favourite movie directors because of his his daring to "swim against the (Hollywood) tide" in his low-tempo long shots and almost purist approach to what makes a scene, a picture, work. This collection consists of three films of the "post-Satantango" period, films that with very few means tells enigmatic and mesmerising stories with great love for the basics of movie making and the people portrayed in them though some of them at first glance doesn't seem so aimable, but who amongst us is that? People, thought, grow on you when you get to know them and the reasons why why they do as they do. (This is also one of Bela Tarrs reason for making movies: trying to understand human beings). If you like Tarkovsky and Angelopoulos, Bela Tarr will certainly appeal to you. Luckily the European way of telling stories, the European film making, can safely stand on its own feet and stands firmly with Bela Tarr. The Bela Tarr Collection [DVD]
