Great Value
Good intro to Dizzy and his band, however there is not a lot from his more chilled and cool stuff
Dizzy overview
I have yet to hear an Avid release that did not warrant 5 stars and this is yet another. CD 1 opens with the Gillespie band at the Newport Jazz festival in July 1957. As with all Gillespie live recordings there is a certain amount of goofing about but plenty of good meaty performances. Apart from the leader, we also get to hear plenty of other soloists, all of whom are identified. Next up is an album called Dizzy and Strings but only four of the eight tunes have violins attached and are never less than interesting. The remaining four tracks are by what is clearly a studio band performing titles co-written by Gillespie and Buster Harding. Lucky Thompson appears on two tracks and J.J.Johnson on one. I'm not too happy about the given recording dates which are listed as 15th September 1954 and the following day (with strings) as the line ups are vastly different. CD 2 opens with the album "World Statesman". Although not given I can advise the recording date as being June 1956. Despite some of the comments this was recorded in a studio. Plenty of good stuff here featuring such people as Phil Woods, Billy Mitchell and Joe Gordon. Finally we have a straight copy of the original 10" LP of the famous Pasadena concert presented by Gene Norman. No recording date is given but I would guess it to be early 1948. To my mind the two stand out tracks are "Good Bait" and "Manteca". The latter featuring Chano Pozo in what is described as his very last recorded performance. This issue serves as a reminder of just how many tunes Gillespie either wrote or co-wrote. Highly recommended.
