This book quickly replaced my previous fave. See China less as an intellectual exercise but more with emotional realities, I share his outlook! Very dark.. and funny.

The classic. First stop for most I think, including me. Responsible for my interest in China and self-exile. Thanks to you Jung Chang!

There are so many 'I survived China but only just' memoirs around, but if you read one you will very likely read another, and this would be a fine addition. Again, fantastic.

From the life of a black (as opposed to a red) funny.. great.. heartwarming.. she learns to hold a gun!

My boss's friend remarked once that he suspected there were people living in villages who probably didn't know they were part of a larger whole called China. Yes! One such chapter here describes them.

A different period of history, during the warlords/republic. So great but oh so short! There must be more!

The second installment, unlike star wars sequels does not disappoint. Fantastic.

Absolutely fascinating to get a glimpse into this level of rankage in the party workings.. (altho Jan Wong has her criticisms) Still... a mammoth read, but totally readable.. so intriguing!

Covers different events as her family escapes China before the cultural revolution.. so even less history here, still an interesting story.

Really fascinating the way the tales of the first emperor is told her, intwined with memories of Yen Mah's life. Very readable.
