Books for first year vet students
Biochemistry, 5th Ed.Biochemistry, 5th Ed. by Lubert Stryer
Buy used from: £30.00
Fantastic pictures and diagrams, which are often used by my lecturers in their handouts. The integrated media isn't all that exciting. At the moment there is a discount if bought with no. 2.
Molecular Biology of the Cell [Book and CD-ROM]Molecular Biology of the Cell [Book and CD-ROM] by Bruce Alberts
Buy used from: £34.99
This book is also recomended by my university and see above.
Developmental BiologyDevelopmental Biology by Scott F. Gilbert
Buy used from: £25.97
I hate this book. It is confusing and poorly organised. I found myself having to look up words every sentence. The c.d rom would be fine if you were pre-GCSE. A far better embryology book is no. 4.
Essentials of Human EmbryologyEssentials of Human Embryology by William J. Larsen
Buy used from: £15.00
This book is much better, even though it is human embryology! Easy reading.
Molecular Cell Biology 4th edMolecular Cell Biology 4th ed by James E. Darnell
Buy used from: £4.00
This book and no. 2 are very similar, so even though I prefer this book I would take advantage of the above deal.
Textbook of Veterinary AnatomyTextbook of Veterinary Anatomy by K. M. Dyce DVM & S BSc MRCVS
Buy new: £69.34 / Used from: £60.00
The best veterinary anatomy book ever. Fantastically laid out and very readable. The pictures are amazing. Seriously, buy it now!
Horse Anatomy: A Pictorial Approach to Equine StructureHorse Anatomy: A Pictorial Approach to Equine Structure by Peter C. Goody
Buy new: £8.67 / Used from: £6.90
This has everything that you would ever want to know about horse anatomy in it. However, its layout is not great. There is a labelled picture on the right page and the labels are explained on the left
Dog Anatomy: A Pictorial Approach to Canine StructureDog Anatomy: A Pictorial Approach to Canine Structure by Peter C. Goody
Buy new: £7.99 / Used from: £7.61
This book and no. 7 have the same layout. Fine if you aren't afraid of lots of small text.
Colour Atlas of Veterinary Anatomy: The Dog and the Cat v. 3Colour Atlas of Veterinary Anatomy: The Dog and the Cat v. 3 by Stanley Done
Buy used from: £180.94
My favourite out of all the vet books I own. This is great, but only if you like atlases. Takes you through layer by layer with pictures and corresponding, well drawn diagrams.
Getting Horses Fit: Improve Your Horse's PerformanceGetting Horses Fit: Improve Your Horse's Performance by Sarah Pilliner
Buy used from: £1.47
As I am not a horsey person I found this very useful. Great diagrams of the hoof. Suggested diets for horses of varying workload. Not really essential for first year.
The Horsemaster's NotebookThe Horsemaster's Notebook by Mary Rose
Buy used from: £0.01
Good to get your basic horse anatomy and husbandry sorted. I have both this book and no. 10 but just one would be fine. This one is best if you know nothing about tack.
Practical Lambing: A Guide to Veterinary Care at LambingPractical Lambing: A Guide to Veterinary Care at Lambing by F.A. Eales
Buy used from: £5.02
Very detailed. Contains diagrams of all the possible birth positions. Essential reading before going on your lambing EMS.
Spurgeon's Color Atlas of Large Animal Anatomy: The EssentialsSpurgeon's Color Atlas of Large Animal Anatomy: The Essentials by Thomas O. McCracken
Buy new: £26.54 / Used from: £26.50
Basic and not really worth the money. This book has horses, cattle, sheep, chickens, goats and alpacas! Good diagrams, but they don't make up for the lack of photos. I still quite like it though.
