I have loved this book since I was about nine. If you're feeling down, then this is a must read. It's a brilliantly witty story about so many things, and so many different types of people.

From fantastic travel writer Bill Bryson, it's sometimes hard to believe that what he writes is real. It's very funny to read what he thinks of us Brits. The 'Vodaphone Man' is hilarious.

Although dark, the intricacy of the characters is unmatched.

Probably Jane Austen's darkest novel, the way Fanny is seen by the superior all the way through is interesting in terms of her suppression.

Although as a character I can't stand Emma, the novel is very good, and although she gets the person she loves, Emma does in a way get her comeuppance.
