David Bowie Part 2: 1983-2004
Let's DanceLet's Dance by David Bowie
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.30
Consciously designed to be a big hit, this is brilliantly produced. The title song is faultless, Ricochet is insane, Shake It is a forgotten classic.

Slick and a bit soulless. The songs may be good, but the arrangements don't help them.
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence [DVD] [1983]Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence [DVD] [1983]
Buy new: £4.68 / Used from: £2.79
Bowie's last substantial lead role in a film. Dreamlike and poetic.
The Hunger [DVD] [1983]The Hunger [DVD] [1983]
Buy new: £3.68 / Used from: £2.05
Not as bad as is generally suggested, but pretty lightweight and dull considering the subject matter.
TonightTonight by David Bowie
Buy new: £3.48 / Used from: £0.97
For my money, Bowie's worst LP. Some great concepts and lyrics, but really badly misjudged covers and production.

The title song's pretty exceptional.
Labyrinth (Collector's Edition) [DVD] [1986]Labyrinth (Collector's Edition) [DVD] [1986]
Buy new: £3.88 / Used from: £2.95
Superficially good Terry Jones/Jim Henson collaboration that doesn't quite hang together. Within You is a great song.
Never Let Me DownNever Let Me Down by David Bowie
Buy new: £3.48 / Used from: £2.29
A big step in the right direction: some great songs like the title song, Glass Spider, and Zeroes are let down by lazy, dated production.
David Bowie - Glass Spider [DVD] [1988]David Bowie - Glass Spider [DVD] [1988] by David Bowie
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £7.34
Despite its reputation for overblown visuals, (including a metal-winged, abseiling Bowie) this is actually a lot more entertaining than Serious Moonlight.
Tin MachineTin Machine by Tin Machine
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £3.99
An experiment that nearly worked, some powerful music and great melodies, sabotaged by the deliberately shoddy lyrics and arrangements.
Tin Machine IITin Machine II by Tin Machine
Buy used from: £17.50
More painstaking than its predecessor, resulting in several completely great songs... and a couple of hilariously awful ones.
Oy Vey, BabyOy Vey, Baby by Tin Machine
Buy used from: £19.86
Historically worthwhile but pretty uninspired to be honest. Nobody could call this an essential Bowie LP.
Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me [DVD] [1989]Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me [DVD] [1989]

Bowie has a great cameo role in one of the best scenes in David Lynch's disturbing masterpiece. Highly recommended.
Black Tie White NoiseBlack Tie White Noise by David Bowie
Buy used from: £12.99
The solo comeback: a reunion with Let's Dance producer Nile Rodgers, and a more collaborative effort this time round. Inconsistent but sporadically exceptional.
The Buddha of Suburbia: Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK]The Buddha of Suburbia: Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK] by David Bowie
Buy used from: £5.94
Not the ignored classic some would claim it to be, but this is a very welcome experimental effort. The contributions from Mike Garson are a highlight.
OutsideOutside by David Bowie
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £1.95
A proper return to form. A uniquely textured mix of cut up craziness, industrial noise and majestic songwriting, with amazing contributions from Garson, Alomar and Eno. Bowie's best LP of the 90s.
EarthlingEarthling by David Bowie
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £2.16
Recorded quickly by most of Bowie's then live band, I can't help thinking this is overrated. Looking For Satellites is brilliant, but most of the songs are buried under messy drums and noisy guitar.
I Can't ReadI Can't Read by David Bowie
Buy used from: £19.95
A rerecorded Tin Machine song, this superior outtake from Earthling was used over the end credits in the Ice Storm. Best bit of the film.
I'm Afraid of AmericansI'm Afraid of Americans by David Bowie
Buy used from: £3.48
Trent Reznor's mini-album length remix of one of the better Earthling songs (a 1.Outside reject). Very good, and so was the video.
Hours...Hours... by David Bowie
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £2.24
All of the songs were co-written by Reeves Gabrels, and the result was another patchy, rushed sounding record. A couple of superb songs though: Something In the Air is the best.
HeathenHeathen by David Bowie
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £1.19
Another LP acclaimed as the best since Scary Monsters. Definitely the best since 1.Outside anyway. The return of Visconti as co-producer, some dated bass sounds, and several soaring, melancholy songs.
RealityReality by David Bowie
Buy new: £14.98 / Used from: £1.78
Another inconsistent record marred by pointless cover versions, but containing stunningly good moments in songs like New Killer Star and Days.

Buy new: £13.69 / Used from: £3.39
A well chosen set list and a pretty great band. A lack of subtlety, and some misjudged moments, but not many. The best of the live videos.
Sound + VisionSound + Vision by David Bowie
Buy used from: £41.66
The best compilation, with a clever mix of rarities and overlooked LP tracks amongst the usual hits. Dull packaging and a bit expensive though.
The Complete David BowieThe Complete David Bowie by Nicholas Pegg
Buy new: £16.99 / Used from: £9.50
Easily the best book about Bowie ever. Comprehensively detailed, and full of insight and wit. And written by one of the actors who play Daleks in the new series of Doctor Who.
