	Ivan's Childhood [1962] [DVD] Buy new: £10.98 Debut feature: A startling war film. Ivan is a child-scout, this is a good film of childhood and terror. Clear-eyed and full of shots - birch trees, flooded woodland - which hint at where T will go.
	Andrei Rublev [DVD] [1973] Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £7.75 Iconic! (Ho, ho) An episodic film, and flawless. Horses, violence, speech + silence, art + barbarity. Favourite scenes: snow in a cathedral, a pagan festival of lights, casting a bell.
	Mirror [DVD] [1974] Buy new: £5.58 A puzzle, an autobiographical hall of mirrors, memory, Russian history. Tarkovsky in search of lost time. I have a feeling this could be thought about endlessly, like a life.
	Solaris [DVD] [1972] Buy new: £8.88 / Used from: £6.54 based on Stanislaw Lem's novella and far better than the recent remake. Memory keeps resurrecting a lost love in orbit around the strange planet of Solaris, and its sea of immortality.
	Stalker [DVD] [1979] Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £7.50 My personal favourite. Stalker, Professor and Writer journey to 'the zone' in search of their heart's desire. Every shot is tense and beautiful. The end makes my heart either break or turn to stone
	Nostalgia [DVD] [1983] A film about exile, and faith, about Europe and Russia. Most memorably a bravura shot of a candle being carried through steam, and the flooded ruins of a cathedral.
	The Sacrifice [DVD] [1986] Buy new: £9.68 / Used from: £9.99 His last film, and the first that I saw. Redemption and fire: dazzling opening, a ten minute shot of child and man planting a tree and walking up a hill. I was hooked from then on in...
	The Films of Andrei Tarkovsky: A Visual Fugue by Vida T. Johnson Buy new: £16.14 / Used from: £12.37 The best book about his films. Discussion of all the films, guides, background, overviews, insights and information. Go for this and avoid the mistake-ridden Mark Le Fanu book.
	Sculpting in Time: Reflections on the Cinema by Andrey A. Tarkovsky Buy new: £13.66 / Used from: £12.08 Tarkovsky's own book on film-making. An extended manifesto, a meditation on art and spirituality. Very interesting.
	Time within Time: Diaries, 1970-86 by Andrei Tarkovsky Buy new: £19.00 / Used from: £14.49 Tarkovsky's diaries, full of lists, autobiographical fragments, acerbic comments on the films of others, moving annotations on his loves and final loss of health.

	"Andrei Rublev" (BFI Film Classics) by Robert Bird Buy new: £9.99 / Used from: £11.83 BFI monograph on Andrei Rublev. Not essential but crisply written and interesting enough.
