![]() | Clinically Oriented Anatomy by Keith L. Moore
Buy new: £31.50 / Used from: £16.25 The daddy! Why buy anything else? Great for answering questions in the anatomy workbook you will get, can be a bit difficult to navigate through and some of the pics are a bit rubbish.
![]() | Gray's Anatomy for Students: with StudentConsult Access by Richard Drake PhD
Buy new: £44.99 / Used from: £24.99 Very good - better pictures and less waffle, but relates less well to the infamous anatomy workbook than Moore - surface anatomy is better than in Moore but other clincical info is less good.
![]() | Kumar and Clark Clinical Medicine by Parveen Kumar
Buy used from: £34.62 Good book. Useful for firm 1 learning prescriptions (homework - presentations for GP attachments), but not indispensible just yet and pretty expensive.
![]() | Human Physiology: The Mechanisms of Body Function by Arthur J. Vander
Very good, easy to read, covers all the physiology , better than the recommended text Berne and Levy, has nice flow diagrams summarise difficult concepts.
![]() | Pharmacology by Humphrey P. Rang
Buy used from: £22.00 THE pharm book - a bit detailed but good if you don't get some of the numerous pharmacology lectures and good for tutorless tutorials (a.k.a teach yourself pharmacology!)
![]() | Wheater's Functional Histology: A Text and Colour Atlas (Functional Histology (Wheater's)) by Paul R. Wheater
Buy used from: £27.30 More pictures than Stevens and Lowe, so useful for your microscope test, but lacks the clinical correlations and detail of book below. Get from library if you need it.
![]() | Human Histology: with STUDENT CONSULT Access by Alan Stevens MBBS FRCPath
Stevens and Lowe = Histology at Bham covered!- not amazing but does the job - covers all the histology and some good pics and clincal info too.
![]() | Biochemistry: Molecules, Cells and the Body by Dr Jocelyn Dow
Buy new: £56.04 / Used from: £9.77 Hardly used a biochem text this year, but next year you might need one more as Yr 1 2006 has NEW MODULES and more cellular biology as currently we do too little! This one is ok, Baynes is good too.
![]() | Essential Clinical Anatomy: AND Dynamic Human Anatomy by Keith L. Moore
Buy used from: £14.99 It's too detailed to be a revision text, but not enough to be a core text. What is its purpose? Who knows? Not essential. Smaller version of Moore and Dalley basically.
![]() | The Digestive System: Systems of the Body Series by Margaret Smith
Buy new: £20.09 / Used from: £9.50 Prof Smiths book - contains all you need to know if you fall asleep in her lectures (very likely) and useful for in-course assessments and PBLs... which are shamelessly lifted directly from it!
![]() | Principles of Renal Physiology by C.J. Lote
Buy new: £41.72 / Used from: £45.25 Prof Lote's book - in spite of his promotion of it lecture, it's actually good, no waffle and easy to read, covers all the renal - don't be surprised when diagrams from it turn up on exams!
![]() | Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain (**) by Mark F. Bear
Buy new: £23.82 / Used from: £21.99 An expensive doorstop. Easily the biggest waste of money this year as lecture and tutorial notes were enough for Neuro. I'm told it will be useful next year.
![]() | An Introduction to Cardiovascular Physiology (Arnold Publication) by J Levick
Buy new: £24.38 / Used from: £24.00 Got this from the library for extra info. Excellent book, covers everything, but between Prof Marshall's lecture notes, a physiology textbook, pharm and anatomy notes, cardio is pretty much covered.
![]() | Instant Anatomy by Robert H. Whitaker
Buy new: £14.06 / Used from: £12.00 Good for quick reference in anatomy tutorials, but some diagrams are over-simplified and not brilliant for revising, because it requires some anatomy knowledge to use it - so was useless for me!
![]() | Health Psychology: A Textbook by Jane Ogden
Buy used from: £9.00 Despite the subject it's not a bad book. It's on the reading list, don't buy it though as lecture and tutorial notes are enough to pass you Behavioural Science - get it from the library.
![]() | Sociology as Applied to Medicine by Graham Scambler BSc PhD
Buy used from: £8.50 Also on the reading list, quite good for expanding on lecture topics and really good reference for Firm 1 (GP attachment) essay, but loads in the library and lecture/tutorial notes are enough to pass.
![]() | Concise Medical Dictionary (Oxford Paperback Reference)
Buy used from: £5.99 Indispensible for looking up words you don't in anatomy workbook (esp the clinical stuff) - but you'll get it free during fresher's so don't buy it.
![]() | Essential Medical Genetics (Essentials) by Michael Connor
Buy new: £22.94 / Used from: £4.33 Both this and Emery's are on the reading list for genetics, but lectures for genetics and support material on WebCT are brilliant (borderline excessive!) so get them from library if you need them.
![]() | Anatomy at a Glance by Omar Faiz
Buy new: £17.10 / Used from: £16.00 My choice for anatomy revision - when I turned to my anatomy folder and thought "Why did I mostly use Google/Wikipedia to answer the questions and actually learn nothing?"
![]() | How to Read a Paper: The Basics of Evidence Based Medicine by Trisha Greenhalgh
Buy used from: £14.91 Good for learning about evidence based medicine, which the medical school (allegedly) will teach you about - and then set you an essay on! Useful for critical appraisal of journal papers for Firm 1.
![]() | Essential Cell Biology by Bruce Alberts
Buy used from: £30.00 I got an old copy of this. Really didn't use it a lot, but better than others on reading list. Possibly more useful for 2006 Year 1 as there will be more emphasis on the basic underlying princples.
