![]() | The Maltese Falcon (2 Disc Special Edition) [DVD] [1941]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.49 Arguably the beginning of the classic film noir period, and certainly what spawned my love of noir. Peter Lorre is wonderfully comical, and Bogart commands the screen of course.
![]() | This Gun For Hire [DVD] [1942]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.70 Based on a Graham Greene story, as quite a few great noirs were. Veronica Lake won my heart (an easy job if I'm honest) with her literally magical song and dance.
![]() | Murder, My Sweet - Farewell My Lovely [1944] [DVD]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £250.00 The first successful screen adaptation of a Raymond Chandler story. Wonderful stylized imagery by Edward Dmytryk, and plenty of genuine laughs from the witty script and performances.
![]() | Double Indemnity [DVD]
Buy new: £5.08 / Used from: £4.85 Scripted by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler, a meeting of two great wits. It's a moving and entertaining story. Edward G. Robinson steals the show with his suicide policy speech.
![]() | The Big Sleep [1946] [DVD]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.92 More Chandler, as Bogart gives his interpretation of Philip Marlowe. This one's sexy as hell, excellently humorous and confusing to boot. Ignore the plot, just go along for the ride.
![]() | The Blue Dahlia [DVD]
Buy new: £4.28 / Used from: £2.50 Yet more sparkling wit from Chandler's only original solo-written screenplay. If the ending seems like a bizarre mislead, it's because the US Army wouldn't allow the planned ending that is suggested.
![]() | The Killers [DVD] [1946]
Buy new: £4.98 Burt Lancaster gives a moving performance as a good guy led astray (but then who wouldn't play the sucker for Ava Gardner?), told in flashback as his murder is investigated.
![]() | Gilda [DVD] [1946]
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £2.89 A bizarre tale of emotional manipulation and sado-masochism, featuring Rita Hayworth's infamous glove-striptease. When she slapped Glenn Ford, it actually broke two of his teeth.
![]() | The Lady From Shanghai [DVD] [1948]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.89 Orson Welles' surreal take on noir, verging on fantastic parody most of the time, and sadly butchered by the studio system. The climax in a hall of mirrors is a marvel.
![]() | Crossfire [DVD] [1947]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £4.45 A post-war condemnation of anti-Semitism with more striking imagery by Edward Dmytryk. It's almost worrying how patronising the message had to be, but past that it's a great and chilling film.
![]() | Key Largo [1948] [DVD]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £1.99 Another brilliant performance by Edward G. Robinson, and the last pairing of Bogart and his wife Lauren Bacall.
![]() | The Third Man [DVD] [1949]
Buy new: £6.28 / Used from: £4.53 Ask anyone to describe film noir and most of their images will come from this. Skewed camera angles, shadows and dark cobbled alleys - it's all here. Orson Welles completely steals the show.
![]() | In A Lonely Place [DVD] [1950]
Buy new: £4.58 / Used from: £3.25 It seems 1950 was the year Hollywood started to eat itself. Along with a murder enquiry and a tragic, suspicious love affair, it paints a scathing image of the studio system of the time.
![]() | Sunset Boulevard [DVD] [1950]
Buy new: £4.38 / Used from: £3.00 Another scathing portrait of the fickle film industry, but told in a completely different way by the great Billy Wilder. A very eerie film with humour more alarming than funny.
![]() | The Big Heat [DVD] [1953]
Buy new: £4.48 / Used from: £4.20 A great film noir from Fritz Lang's American period. Gloria Grahame is a habitual scene-stealer in this one. My only complaint is the music, which sometimes spells out the action too obviously.
![]() | Rififi [1954] [DVD]
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £4.79 France gave us the term "film noir", and then they gave us one of the best examples of it. The wordless and musicless heist scene is stunning.
![]() | Kiss Me Deadly [DVD] [1955]
Buy new: £3.88 / Used from: £3.99 Comparing noir between the '40s and '50s, it's clear to see the changing sensibilities of America. This noir crosses over into nuclear sci-fi territory, with a terrifyingly bizarre climax.
![]() | The Night Of The Hunter [DVD] [1955]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.98 Robert Mitchum will give you the willies in this. The way the film swings between beautifully calm and stomach-knottingly tense is very unusual, which makes it all the more effective.
![]() | The Killing [DVD] [1956]
Buy new: £4.08 / Used from: £2.28 Another great heist gone wrong in an early Kubrick film. The non-linear storytelling was an influence in Tarantino, and the cast is great, especially the unbearably sexy and cruel Marie Windsor.
![]() | Lift To The Scaffold (B/W) [DVD] [1957]
Buy new: £6.98 Another French noir (originally called Ascenseur pour L'Echafaud), with an outstanding jazz score by the legendary Miles Davis. Very stylish indeed.
![]() | Touch Of Evil [DVD] [1958]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.50 Close to the end of the Production Code, noir got a lot more debauched. Striking work from Orson Welles, especially since the studio restored it as close to his original intention as possible.
![]() | Film Noir Collection [DVD] by Film Noir
