House of LeavesHouse of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

I urge everyone to read this book, it's absolutely masterful. An interesting retaliation against literary convention but never at the expense of a truly gripping and often chilling story. Blew me away
Catch-22Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

Truly hilarious and truly gut wrenching. Not everybody's cup of tea but this book really stuck with me and I have been enjoying Heller's other work since.
The Bell JarThe Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Buy new: £4.49 / Used from: £0.70
What I like about Sylvia Plath is her wicked and dark sense of humour which stops this book becoming completely morose or self pitying. I really admire her work.
Goodnight Mr TomGoodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian

My favourite book as a child, I first read it when I was 9 and it was the first book to make me cry. It is a childs book and yet it is uncompromising about the brutality of war and abuse.Unforgettable
Johnny the Homicidal Maniac: Directors CutJohnny the Homicidal Maniac: Directors Cut by Jhonen Vasquez

I'm not at all into Motley Crue but this is one of the most hilarious books I have ever read. It's like Spinal Tap but so much sleazier. A wonderfully ridiculous rock and roll bio.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (International Writers)Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (International Writers) by Patrick Suskind

A masterful and poetic piece of storytelling at its best. There is a definite feel of listening to the storyteller weave his tale. Grizzly, macabre, fascinating and ultimately phenomenal work.
