* By William Morris, the father of fantasy, written in the 1890s, loved by Tolkien, loved by me. If you read it, you may love it too. Morris built the foundations of modern fantasy. Thank you Mr M!

Tolkien made a world, peopled it, invented languages for it and then he wrote about it. It's so full of detail that it feels like reality. It's my favourite book.

Another of the too few authors who can make a story come alive. This is very close to the top of my list of favourites.

So funny. So clever. So imaginative. So readable again and again and again. Brilliant!

* If you enjoy ghost stories, you can't go wrong with this. Ten stories, some very creepy, and the price is unbelievably reasonable.

* Wuthering Heights is a fantastic story, less spooky than you might think (going by the film), but very haunting nevertheless.

Includes my two favourite Algernon Blackwood stories: "The Willows" and "The Wendigo". Blackwood has the perfect story telling style for ghost/supernatural tales.

*Shorter than the short stories of 'In a Glass Darkly'. A collection of Irish ghost, fairy and diabolical tales. Some could chill you to the bone. Worth every penny!

*I read somewhere that the difference between "real" ghost stories and fictional ones, is that the real ones never have a point. M R James's are real: stuff happens and who knows why? Terrifying!
