	24: Complete Season 4 [DVD] [2004] Buy new: £17.48 / Used from: £11.00 Jack Bauer - what a guy. Maybe the best 24 series. Loses it just a little at the end but great nonetheless
	Spooks : Complete BBC Series 2 [2002] [DVD] Buy new: £10.98 / Used from: £8.60 The series after it had got into its stride, but before it lost the best characters. Nothing as shocking as in the first series, but the writing's much better. Ending's a bit far fetched
	Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) by J.K. Rowling Buy new: £5.51 / Used from: £0.01 The best Harry P book (and they're all great) - manages to be ambitious and moving without rambling like the next ones
	The Gormenghast Novels: Titus Groan / Gormenghast / Titus Alone by Mervyn Laurence Peake Buy used from: £8.38 The style puts some people off, but these are much-imitated, never bettered gothic masterpieces. Third part of the trilogy is very different and not so much to my taste
	A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving Buy new: £6.71 / Used from: £0.07 One of the greatest literary characters around. You'll know how it ends fairly soon into the book, but still be shocked. Put up with the dull narrator's asides - it's well worth it
	His Dark Materials Gift Set: "Northern Lights", "The Subtle Knife", "The Amber Spyglass" by Philip Pullman Buy used from: £7.99 Ok, it's a wee bit pretentious, but the books' ambition and originality make up for it.
	Kezia by Protest the Hero Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.99 Great something-core music from these Canadian youngsters. My most-played album right now. Methalheads may hate the clean vocals, but the rest of us will lap it up
	The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii) Buy new: £26.95 / Used from: £16.99 Hell yes!!!!11!! Been waiting for this a long time. Have my doubts that the GCN version will ever see the light of day over here
	Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness by Coheed and Cambria Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £0.98 Great pop-prog (their fans will hate me for saying that). Especially if you like high pitched male voices
	Resident Evil 4 (GameCube) Buy new: £34.99 / Used from: £3.50 One of the best put-together games around. 'cube version's the one to get
	Alaska by Between the Buried and Me Buy new: £8.18 / Used from: £5.22 Selkies!!! omg!! Some great guitar playing here. A bit like no. 7 but minus the singing and with clean jazz interludes. Awesome
	Translating the Name by Saosin Buy used from: £31.45 Don't get if you want to stand out from the crowd, but this has a great singer and memorable songs. So much better than their LP (with different signer)
	Casually Dressed And Deep In Conversation by Funeral For A Friend Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £1.10 I love these guys. But they've gone the wrong direction with Hours. Sigh
	Sherlock Holmes: Original Illustrated "Strand" Edition: The Complete Stories (Wordsworth Special Editions) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Buy new: £4.46 / Used from: £0.67 This is a silly bargain! 1100+ pages of the best detective eva for a fiver! you do the math. You do need good eyes to read the print, mind
	Landscape and Memory by Simon Schama Buy new: £19.95 / Used from: £14.88 One of my all-time fave history books. Schama in his pre-tv days. May not be the most solid work academically, but it's great to read
	The Civilization of Europe in the Renaissance by John Hale Buy used from: £4.34 Great intro to this period of history, and lots of pictures when you get bored of words
	The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett Buy used from: £0.01 Great summer/travel reading. Black and white characters, but likeable ones and you'll learn something too
	The ABC Murders (Poirot Facsimile Edition) by Agatha Christie Buy used from: £21.80 My personal favourite Agatha C. Genuinely creepy even if the denoument's not up to her best
	And Then There Were None (Agatha Christie Collection) by Agatha Christie Buy new: £4.97 / Used from: £0.44 Probably the cleverest Agatha C. You'll read it in one go!
	The Name of the Rose (Vintage Classics) by Umberto Eco Buy new: £5.96 / Used from: £2.06 Medieval murder + monks + semiotics + an Italian with a huge intellect = this. Even if you take out the clever bits it's still a great story
	The Guitarist Buy new: £14.19 / Used from: £13.06 A fantastic 'proper' guitarist. Koyunbaba's one of the most hypnotically beautiful pieces of music I've heard
	Spirited Away [DVD] Buy new: £6.88 / Used from: £4.50 Really beautiful. Art and story both awesome. And it won arty European film awards, so you get to watch cartoons and still be sophisticated!
	Princess Mononoke (Special Edition) [DVD] Buy new: £6.48 / Used from: £4.70 More ambitious but not quite as magical (almost though) as Spirited Away. Still great! Be warned, it's a bit violent for the younger kids (and they won't really get it anyway)
	Howl's Moving Castle [DVD] [2005] Buy new: £7.88 / Used from: £5.98 A bit more variable and less accessible, but has some of the best Ghibli characters
	The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - 2 Disc Special Edition [1966] [DVD] Buy new: £2.98 / Used from: £1.85 Clint Eastwood = the man's man. This is a great film with humour, pathos, grandeur and other abstract nouns in abundance. And great music too!
