Originality. Copy pretty much everything in this film and you will make a masterpiece - but it won't be original. Above all shows the importance of originality.

Set design. Beautiful use of set and viewpoint to create the effects of height and awe to a child. This is a superb example of how to influence your film with a great set design.

Action. To do action, adventure and romance let the thing flow then edit - if you can get Errol Flynn, all the better.

Location. Great sets and location acts as almost the central character and this is greatly enhanced by viewpoints used and the arty camera angles. Also shows how darkness can make a film 'moody'.

Theme. Unusual use of cinema at the time - it is a visualised thought piece really, but transformed the art of movie making because it shows what the medium of cinema can accommodate.

Focus. This basic movie could be used as a training film for all budding film directors. Never loses its focus on main story.

Psychological imagery. Visual imagery and suspense make this film quite spooky. I can't even tell you how this is achieved. It takes a special talent to even know how to make a film like this.

Symbolism. This is practically two different films in one because it is all so heavily symbolic.

Visual performance. There are hints of Chaplin, Laural and Hardy and other silent classics here as the director weaves a wonderfully entertaining story using a simple plot. Note the sound effects too.

Style and charisma - This movie has a very strong personality thanks mainly to the vision of Kazan and his use of the new method acting phenomenon. But Brando was the trump card.
