	The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes Buy new: £7.66 / Used from: £5.30 Absorbing account of the founding of Australia, or if you are an aboriginal the invasion of Australia. A brilliant piece of social history.
	Pity the Nation: Lebanon at War by Robert Fisk Buy new: £8.36 / Used from: £6.99 Fisks book is an amazing piece of reportage and history of the War in Lebanon. Absolutely absorbing.
	Year 501 by Noam Chomsky Buy used from: £4.00 An excellent introduction to Chomsky writings and the nearest he gets to narrative history!
	The World Turned Upside Down: Radical Ideas During the English Revolution (Penguin History) by Christopher Hill Buy new: £7.10 / Used from: £4.73 You will never view the 17th Century in the same way again! Possibly best to read the next book before tackling this one if your knowledge of the Stuart Age is a bit patchy. Well worth the effort

	Anatomy of a War: Vietnam, the United States, and the Modern Historical Experience by Gabriel Kolko Buy used from: £4.94 The best book on the Vietnam War by far. A sustained effort to document and describe the monsterous US invasion of Vietnam.
	The Iron Wall: Israel and the Arab World by Avi Shlaim Buy new: £9.06 / Used from: £6.00 Comprehensive and well documented account of Israels first 50 years. Lets the air out of more than a few Zionist myths pity his predictions at the end of the book turned out to be too optimistic
	The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappe Buy new: £7.61 / Used from: £6.57 Israeli historian Illan Pappe detailed and documentated account of the Ethnic cleansing of 700,000 Palestinians from Israel during the 1947 "war". An essential book.
	The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering by Norman G. Finkelstein Buy new: £5.94 / Used from: £3.00 Finkelstein is somewhat infamous but dont let that put you off reading this well documented expose of the nefarious lot who use the holocaust for their own mendacious ends.
	Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent by Eduardo Galeano Buy new: £6.22 / Used from: £4.16 An extraordinary account of the 500 years since the Europeans "discovered" America. A well written, always readable and at times humourous but angry book.
	The Clash of Fundamentalisms: Crusades, Jihads and Modernity by Tariq Ali Buy new: £8.38 / Used from: £2.04 Tariq Ali on top form. Extraordinary account of the context in which Islamic Fundamentalism took root and its mirror image US fundamentalism. An immensely informative and often funny book.
	The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein Buy new: £6.46 / Used from: £4.72 Klein make the connections and draws the parallels of the evil and despair visited on the world by the sheer grubby opportunism of our Neo Liberal masters. An impressive work.
	The Making of the English Working Class (Penguin History) by E. P. Thompson Buy new: £15.97 / Used from: £9.99 A detailed and sympathetic work looking at the development of working class culture in England from 1780 to 1830. A landmark book that still worth reading 40 years on.
	The Scramble for Africa by Thomas Pakenham Buy new: £9.97 / Used from: £0.01 Covers the last quarter of the 19th Century and the European nations rapacious greed for African Colonies. Hard book to put down and also see the same authors "The Boar War."
	King Leopold's Ghost: A story of greed, terror and heroism by Adam Hochschild Buy new: £6.96 / Used from: £4.02 Well written compulsive read of the odious King Leopolds colony in the Congo (includes his side kick HM Stanley of Livingstone fame). Marketed as a humanitarian endevour it cost 10,000,000+ lives.
	Modern Africa: A Social and Political History by Basil Davidson Buy new: £29.44 / Used from: £9.60 Comprehensive look at Africa in the 20th Century and does what a good book should make you do - think!
	The African Slave Trade by Basil Davidson Buy used from: £0.77 The Slave trade from its roots to the end. It has some moving accounts from the African perspective at the time the trade was in its full and bloody flow.
	Stolen Continents: 500 Years of Conquest and Resistance in the Americas by Ronald Wright Buy used from: £7.62 A readable account of the effect of European colonialism on the original inhabitants of south and north America. A very moving and disturbing book.
	The Black Jacobins: Toussaint L'Ouverture and the San Domingo Revolution (Penguin History) by C L R James Buy new: £8.35 / Used from: £5.25 Written over 70 years ago this is a landmark work in Black history. Toussaint L'Ouverture dwarfs Napolean, Pitt and done more to end slavery than William Wilberforce ever did.
	Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Aftermath of World War II by John W Dower Buy new: £10.28 / Used from: £3.52 Fascinating and wide ranging account of the American occupation of Japan after World War 2 and how the Japanese dealt with it. A rich and readable book.
	Deterring Democracy by Noam Chomsky Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.01 Well documented, and sourced critique of Americas alleged love for Democracy abroad. A classic.
	Killing Hope: US Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II by William Blum Buy used from: £22.00 An A to Z of countries the U.S. has interfered in over the years - a far better book than Blums more well known Rouge States.
	The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy and the End of the Republic by Chalmers Johnson Buy new: £7.46 / Used from: £4.29 A thoughtfull book on the U.S. and its imperial machinations by Chalmers Johnson. Very readable and plenty of food for thought.
