Jordan too needs to be re-read. Only then will you be able to appreciate the true depths of the story. Don't be daunted by the number of characters, there are excellent reference sites on the web.

Often filed under horror, I would class the Women of the Otherworld series as urban fantasy. Werewolves, vampires, demons and assorted other supernatural races dealing with life (and a body or two).

Discworld - you'll like it if you like Red Dwarf, Blackadder and other clever/witty types of humour. Page after page of outstanding word smithing... first book not my favourite though. Start with two.

The Banned &Bannished series is well written as is the next series by the author. I picked this up in a book shop. Word of mouth recommendation had made it a hit in that shop. I wasn't disappointed.

Classed as young adults fantasy, Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy will tingle the intellect of readers of all age groups. Highly thought provoking.

An urban fantasy series, The Weather Wardens is definitely one for the girls. There is almost as much talk of shoes as there is of demons. Ok, not quite, but enough to make Rachel your new best friend

Not sophisticated, highly intellectual or intricate, yet a firm favourite. Some tales are so easy on the reader, they become a compulsion. Reading equivalent of comfort food. Great for younger readers

Tamora Pierce writes great fantasy for younger readers (though old, I like it too). It is the story of a girl posing as a boy to get the job she wants. And of course we get magic mixed in.

Fantasy Romance at its best. It is almost a shame to class it as romance at all when there is so much good fantasy going on and the story tackles serious issues like prejudice along the way
