A bookworm's favourite bookshelf
The Dumas ClubThe Dumas Club by Arturo Perez-Reverte
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £0.01
Arturo Perez Reverte is a must read author for all Dumas enthusiasts, but this particular novel, with its dark overtones and twisting enigmas is absolutely marvellous.
Beowulf (Manchester medieval studies)Beowulf (Manchester medieval studies)
Buy new: £7.56 / Used from: £4.68
My favourite poetic work of all time. This edition is the best translation that I've come across, choosing a prose format rather than attempting to recreate a poetic art particular to pre-12thC.
The Divine Comedy (Oxford World's Classics)The Divine Comedy (Oxford World's Classics) by Dante Alighieri
Buy used from: £5.00
Again, a particularly good edition. Dante Aligheri's Commedia is, without question, one of the greatest works in literary history.
The Picture of Dorian Gray (Penguin Popular Classics)The Picture of Dorian Gray (Penguin Popular Classics) by Oscar Wilde
Buy new: £2.16 / Used from: £0.01
Such an amazing piece of literature. Slightly gothic in tone, but oh so special.
The Monstrous Middle AgesThe Monstrous Middle Ages by Bettina Bildhauer
Buy new: £17.09 / Used from: £10.00
Possibly one of my favourite works of criticism of all time. Edited by one of my lecturers, this book played a key part in my personal research projects. The essays in here are absolutely precious!
The Gormenghast TrilogyThe Gormenghast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £8.41
Peake reaches out into the mist and, pulling back his hand, makes ink from the clouds and sets down to write this trilogy. The first book is the definitive, yet the others are still truly exquisite.
The Athenian MurdersThe Athenian Murders by Jose Carlos Somoza
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.01
Somewhat of an oddity, the plot is based on A.Christie, & the clues given by the author are an insult to intelligence. The format though, is unique. It has merit for its sheer ingenuity of style!
The Black Jewels TrilogyThe Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop
Buy new: £13.21 / Used from: £9.49
Sheer escapsim, this sensual, and in places perverse, world is an example of how to take delicate & taboo subjects & turn them into something inspiring and beautiful. My favourite leisure novels.
A Caress of TwilightA Caress of Twilight by Laurell K. Hamilton
Buy new: £5.46 / Used from: £1.66
It's sheer trash. With faeries. I love it. All four of them.
Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy - Book 1)Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy - Book 1) by Robin Hobb
Buy new: £6.46 / Used from: £0.01
Once again, sheer escapism, but Hobb writes some of the most beautiful literature I've ever come across. Completely engaging, all of her work is superb, but this trilogy is my personal favourite,
Ecclesiastical History of the English People: With Bede's Letter to Egbert and Cuthbert's Letter on the Death of Bede (Classics)Ecclesiastical History of the English People: With Bede's Letter to Egbert and Cuthbert's Letter on the Death of Bede (Classics) by Bede
Buy new: £6.96 / Used from: £2.85
Read inbetween the lines. That makes it far more exciting than it would first appear. And remember, everyone cites Bede.
The Soulforge (Dragonlance: Raistlin & Caramon Majere)The Soulforge (Dragonlance: Raistlin & Caramon Majere) by Margaret Weis
Buy new: £4.88 / Used from: £1.09
More trash, but D&D style. This novel details the beginnings of one the most evil characters in the Dragonlance series, Raistlin. Stare evil in the face and recognize yourself.
The Lord of The RingsThe Lord of The Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
Buy used from: £220.00
One of my most treasured possessions. I don't read this edition for fear of bruising the pages, but it is so gorgeous. I'm so lucky to own something so ingenious, in something so beautiful.
Foucault's PendulumFoucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco
Buy new: £6.73 / Used from: £1.98
An inteligent novel that makes Dan Brown look like a Spot the Dog story (Thank goodness!) Eco's novel is, as well as a conspiracy theorist's dream, a voyage that explores the nature of the self.
Heaven's Embroidered Cloths: Poems by W.B.Yeats (Poetry Series)Heaven's Embroidered Cloths: Poems by W.B.Yeats (Poetry Series) by W.B. Yeats
Buy used from: £10.29
Far from a comprehensive colelction of his works, but this anthology is more about a visual exploration of Yeats' poetry. Light reading, and not an academic edition, but incredibly enjoyable.
The MonkThe Monk by Lewis Matthew Gregory
Buy new: £8.95 / Used from: £5.00
Incredible & random, Lewis' gothic novel, I feel, surpasses others of the genre. The Monk deals with Desire, and how ultimate Desire is transposed onto attainable objects, and how it can be perverted
ShadowdanceShadowdance by Robin Wayne Bailey
Buy used from: £1.76
Dealing with some distrubing themes early in the novel, Shadowdance is a great piece of literature which tackles sensitive subjects incredibly well. Infinitely moving, engrossing piece of fantasy.
