Books I have read recently (September '07-December '07)
The Secret HistoryThe Secret History by Donna Tartt
Buy new: £6.89 / Used from: £0.01
Great tale of college students who commit murder.
The Raw Shark TextsThe Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall
Buy new: £5.96 / Used from: £0.01
Peculiar sci-fi about a man who's memories are eaten by a "conceptual shark" and he has to piece his life back together. Becomes too far out by the end, but is still enjoyable and has a solid cast.
Heart of Darkness (Penguin Classics)Heart of Darkness (Penguin Classics) by Joseph Conrad
Buy new: £4.25 / Used from: £2.52
A man journeys up the Congo to meet the mysterious Kurtz, who has become a demi-God to the natives.
Black DogsBlack Dogs by Ian McEwan
Buy new: £5.12 / Used from: £0.68
A rather vague exploration of "evil", in which a couple bump into some stray Nazi wardogs and have their lives changed forever.
Brainwash: The Secret History of Mind ControlBrainwash: The Secret History of Mind Control by Dominic Streatfeild
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £1.61
Endlessly fascinating study of all kinds of mind control techniques. LSD, hypnosis, religious cults, its all here.
Parallel Worlds: The Science of Alternative Universes and Our Future in the CosmosParallel Worlds: The Science of Alternative Universes and Our Future in the Cosmos by Michio Kaku
Buy new: £7.66 / Used from: £4.23
Should have been really interesting, but to explain ridiculously complex physics to a mass audience is impossible. Many of the theories discussed were hypothetical, so the book could all be nonsense.
Killing FloorKilling Floor by Lee Child
Buy new: £4.83 / Used from: £0.01
Bog standard macho thriller about a guy suspected of murder.
Riddley WalkerRiddley Walker by Russell Hoban
Buy new: £4.48 / Used from: £1.00
Post apocalyptic tale written in a futuristic dialect, making it very frustrating to read. It also has a totally incomprehensible plot. Cannot understand this book's reputation at all.
The New York Trilogy: "City of Glass", "Ghosts" and "Locked Room"The New York Trilogy: "City of Glass", "Ghosts" and "Locked Room" by Paul Auster
Buy new: £4.96 / Used from: £0.01
Three short, interrelated thrillers with a superb otherwordly feel to them
The Origin of Species (Oxford World's Classics)The Origin of Species (Oxford World's Classics) by Charles Darwin
Buy used from: £1.19
Suprisingly modern in parts, very dated in others. The book isn't that well written and feels a bit padded out, but is among the most important ever, regardless.
The Complete MausThe Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman
Buy new: £10.16 / Used from: £8.96
Moving graphic novel about the holocaust, with the Nazis as cats and the Jews as mice.
