Lancaster University Economics Books
EconomicsEconomics by Mr John Sloman
Buy used from: £30.00
decent enough introduction to economics, although is confusing at times. Was the recommended text for my economics 1st year course, but how has been replaced by Begg (see below)
Economics: with Net Tutor password card and Interactive Student Workbook access cardEconomics: with Net Tutor password card and Interactive Student Workbook access card by David Begg
Buy new: £39.23 / Used from: £34.99
Currently the recommended text for Econ101 (as of 2007/8). Not much different to Sloman; I didn't find any of the textbooks particularly important in first year as the lecture notes were adequate
Quantitative Methods for Business and ManagementQuantitative Methods for Business and Management by Frank Dewhurst
Buy new: £31.14 / Used from: £18.00
This book gets a bad review on Amazon because someone recieved it in bad condition. My copy was purchased from Amazon as well and arrived in new condition. Not a great book really, unclear at times.
Intermediate Microeconomics: A Modern ApproachIntermediate Microeconomics: A Modern Approach by Hal R. Varian
Buy new: £33.49 / Used from: £32.99
The intermediate microeconomic text book used at Lancaster. Good text, however it lacks the derivations and technical details required for the 201 course. Nice complement to lecture material though.
MicroeconomicsMicroeconomics by Hugh Gravelle
Buy new: £43.10 / Used from: £35.99
A more complicated microeconomic text, which sits awkwardly between intermediate and advanced levels. For intermediate, Varian is better, and there are better advanced books out there!
MacroeconomicsMacroeconomics by N. Gregory Mankiw
Buy new: £45.08 / Used from: £38.00
Used in the interrmediate macroeconomics course last year, athough there's a new European version due soon. Too many words!! No enough focus on the key material. Overly based on the US economy
Mathematics for Economics and BusinessMathematics for Economics and Business by Mr Ian Jacques
Buy used from: £13.49
Introduction to Quantitative Methods for Economics. This is the standard 2nd year economic maths text, and whilst not perfect is a lot better than Dewhurst.
Using Econometrics: A Practical GuideUsing Econometrics: A Practical Guide by A.H. Studenmund
Buy new: £50.19 / Used from: £45.00
Solid introduction to Econometrics. Material covered is ideal for the 212 Econometrics course. Supplements the lecture notes very well. The section on Simultaneous Equation Models was disappointing.
Advanced Macroeconomics: A PrimerAdvanced Macroeconomics: A Primer by Patrick Minford
Buy new: £23.75 / Used from: £16.70
Co-written by the leading advanced macroeconomist at Lancaster, David Peel, this is the text for advanced macroeconomics. A very conise but technical guide to advanced macroeconomic theory.
Microeconomic AnalysisMicroeconomic Analysis by Hal R. Varian
Buy new: £32.77 / Used from: £29.99
Nice book for advanced microeconomics. Notation & proofs can be a bit tricky, but the author does a good job of explaining the key concepts. The book gets better after the section on consumer theory
Microeconomic TheoryMicroeconomic Theory by Andreu Mas-Colell
Buy new: £34.39 / Used from: £28.00
Excellent advanced microeconomic textbook. Coverage of topics is wide and very detailed. More readable on consumer theory than Varian.
