In 2007, I read . . . (Part I)
To Kill a MockingbirdTo Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Buy new: £4.28 / Used from: £1.98
As I've said before, the literary equivalent of chicken soup. Leaves you feeling all warm inside.
The House of Mirth (Wordsworth Classics)The House of Mirth (Wordsworth Classics) by Edith Wharton
Buy new: £1.99 / Used from: £0.01
I found this a bit of a trial. I think it's because I found it hard to sympathise with Lily Bart. Judging by the number of stars, I seem to be in the minority.
Sons and Lovers (Penguin Popular Classics)Sons and Lovers (Penguin Popular Classics) by D.H. Lawrence
Buy new: £2.00 / Used from: £0.01
Paul Morrell makes me sick.
RestorationRestoration by Rose Tremain
Buy used from: £0.01
A brilliant novel that I see as being primarily about mental illness. It's funny, bawdy and fast-paced.
The Crimson Petal and the WhiteThe Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber
Buy new: £6.96 / Used from: £0.01
So over-rated. Almost a waste of time. No real pay-off.
The Road Less Travelled (Arrow New-Age)The Road Less Travelled (Arrow New-Age) by M.Scott Peck
Buy new: £4.69 / Used from: £0.01
Non-fiction. Some helpful stuff. But a lot of rubbish (including the bit where Peck acclaims open marriages as the only healthy ones) to sift through.
Halos (Heitzmann, Kristen)Halos (Heitzmann, Kristen) by Kristen Heitzmann
Buy new: £8.99 / Used from: £2.06
I'd never read a contemporary Christian novel before. It's quite good.
The Grand SophyThe Grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £2.92
My first Heyer. Lots of fun. Like reading Jane Austen if her IQ had been a couple of dozen points or so lower.
Watership Down (Puffin Books)Watership Down (Puffin Books) by Richard Adams
Buy new: £5.24 / Used from: £0.01
It's all about bunnies. Even so, this is my favourite book in the list so far.
Steps to Freedom in ChristSteps to Freedom in Christ by Neil T. Anderson
Buy used from: £0.01
If you're a raving atheist, this probably wont be your bag. For the Christian or anyone interested in becoming one, this is a very useful tool.
Animal Farm: A Fairy StoryAnimal Farm: A Fairy Story by George Orwell
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £0.01
What is it with me and animal books this year? This just eclipsed 'Watership Down' as my favourite read this year. Genius. A fairy tale about why communism can't work.
Frenchman's Creek (Virago Modern Classics)Frenchman's Creek (Virago Modern Classics) by Daphne Du Maurier
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.01
I liked it but I didn't love it.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Pocket Penguin Classics)One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Pocket Penguin Classics) by Ken Kesey
Buy new: £4.99 / Used from: £3.96
Gripping, gritty, disturbing stuff.
Peter PanPeter Pan by J M Barrie
Buy used from: £0.01
Not just for children after all. I didn't expect this to be so funny.
The World According to Garp (Black Swan)The World According to Garp (Black Swan) by John Irving
Buy new: £5.96 / Used from: £0.01
Has put me off John Irving - possibly forever.
East of Eden (Penguin Modern Classics)East of Eden (Penguin Modern Classics) by John Steinbeck
Buy new: £6.46 / Used from: £3.70
So amazing. Grandiose scope. Perceptive. Exciting. Borderline addictive. I can't say enough good things about this. Made me think about the story of Caine and Able in a completely new way.
Elizabeth and Mary: Cousins, Rivals, QueensElizabeth and Mary: Cousins, Rivals, Queens by Jane Dunn
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.01
A very engaging historical biography. Elizabeth I is always fun to read about, but this is the first book that really brought Mary Queen of Scots to life for me.
The Scarlet Letter (Penguin Popular Classics)The Scarlet Letter (Penguin Popular Classics) by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Buy new: £2.16 / Used from: £0.01
Well, it's okay.
The Painted Veil (Vintage Classics)The Painted Veil (Vintage Classics) by W. Somerset Maugham
Buy new: £5.08 / Used from: £0.79
The thing I like best about this is the characterisation. Kitty and Walter seem so tangible. Not sure I agree with the conclusions Kitty reaches at the end.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) [Children's Edition]Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) [Children's Edition] by J. K. Rowling
Buy new: £10.68 / Used from: £0.01
I for one was not disappointed in the conclusion to J K Rowling's Harry Potter series. I had a great time reading it.
The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn: The Most HappyThe Life and Death of Anne Boleyn: The Most Happy by Eric Ives
Buy new: £11.08 / Used from: £11.10
A good, well-researched biography. But I can't help but think it could have been shorter.
Keep the Aspidistra Flying (Penguin Modern Classics)Keep the Aspidistra Flying (Penguin Modern Classics) by George Orwell
Buy new: £5.71 / Used from: £3.00
Good, but I found Comstock exasperating and often unpleasant.
My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of ScotsMy Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots by John Guy
Buy new: £7.66 / Used from: £0.01
Very good if you have questions about why Mary made so many mistakes and strange decisions. Reading this, I felt I better understood what drove her.
Washington Square (Penguin Classics)Washington Square (Penguin Classics) by Henry James
Buy new: £4.23 / Used from: £0.50
My third Henry James and so far the only one I've enjoyed. I'm so glad I didn't let myself get put off.
Stuart: A Life BackwardsStuart: A Life Backwards by Alexander Masters
Buy new: £4.53 / Used from: £0.01
Read it. Is enjoyment the right word in a case like this? A brilliant book nonetheless.
