Possibly all you need for a wildlife-herb-fruit-veg garden
Pocket Encyclopaedia of Herbs (DK Pocket Encyclopedia)Pocket Encyclopaedia of Herbs (DK Pocket Encyclopedia) by Lesley Bremness
Buy used from: £0.01
The best book on herbs and cultivation, much better than the bulky RHS one. It also has excellent sections on cooking, making garlands and tussie-mussies, beauty: eyes, teeth, skin, and more.
Pocket Encyclopaedia of Organic Gardening (DK Pocket Encyclopedia)Pocket Encyclopaedia of Organic Gardening (DK Pocket Encyclopedia)

You don't really need a book on how to garden organically, just stop using pesticides or any kind of -cides, but this golden oldie from '91 by the late great GH is a fine guide on gardening generally
Wildlife Gardening for Everyone (Rhs)Wildlife Gardening for Everyone (Rhs) by Malcolm Tait
Buy used from: £0.16
Changes the way you view your garden. A guide themed by the small animals and insects that will visit, but it's badly put together and the public's Q&A is a waste of space.
How to Make a Wildlife GardenHow to Make a Wildlife Garden by Chris Baines
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £4.40
That's better - how to make organised chaos.
The Wild Garden (Cassell's Garden Directories)The Wild Garden (Cassell's Garden Directories) by Lucy Huntington
Buy used from: £0.01
Really good. Has an absolutely excellent plant directory.
The Garden PlannerThe Garden Planner by Robin Williams
Buy new: £7.79 / Used from: £2.64
I should have started with this one. Apart from growing long hair, chanting om constantly, sipping raspberry tea and lots of trial and error, you still need a clear plan for your wildlife garden.
Plant Propagation (Royal Horticultural Society's Encyclopaedia of Practical Gardening)Plant Propagation (Royal Horticultural Society's Encyclopaedia of Practical Gardening) by P.D.A.McMillan Browse
Buy new: £5.73 / Used from: £2.80
Proper gardening, roots, rhizomes, division, breaking dormancy, stooling. Most of the tedious (or rude)sounding but essential stuff, strangely doesn't explain the bare basics like- what is a biennial?
Vegetable and Herb ExpertVegetable and Herb Expert by D.G. Hessayon
Buy new: £4.79 / Used from: £1.50
Excellent on individual crops, pests & disease, not organic tho. Can't argue with the price, can argue 'cos I say fertilizers aren't always needed & finger and thumb solves much. Herbs an afterthought
Complete Book of VegetablesComplete Book of Vegetables by Matthew Biggs
Buy new: £21.25 / Used from: £13.04
Covers more veg and unlike the 'Expert' the author has heard of crop rotation, if not clover leys. Even better as with the above it doesn't have an egomaniacal BBC presenter's face on every other page
Growing Fruit (Royal Horticultural Society's Encyclopaedia of Practical Gardening)Growing Fruit (Royal Horticultural Society's Encyclopaedia of Practical Gardening) by Harry Baker
Buy new: £5.71 / Used from: £2.50
A great guide for fruit, probably all you'll ever need. Has a great section on soil drainage which, as such a basic requirement, ideally ought to have been in the propagation guide as well.
The Apple Source BookThe Apple Source Book by Angela King
Buy new: £10.89 / Used from: £4.80
Like a rambling, interesting conversation with a big detour in the kitchen - and all about apples.
The Ultimate Container GardenThe Ultimate Container Garden by David Joyce
Buy new: £10.56 / Used from: £2.98
It really is. Almost stolen off of me twice now.
The Medieval Garden (Gift Books)The Medieval Garden (Gift Books) by Sylvia Landsberg
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £3.87
Could do with some photos of recreated gardens, but the best one on the subject I can find.
In a Unicorn's Garden: Recreating the Mystery and Magic of Medieval GardensIn a Unicorn's Garden: Recreating the Mystery and Magic of Medieval Gardens by Judyth A. McLeod
Buy new: £12.69 / Used from: £9.71
Hmm, wonder what this one is like though. The author is a Dr but it does sound a bit fake: 'The Sorcerer's Garden', 'Titania's Garden'. If you're a girl and into girly fantasy probably ideal.
Collins Tree GuideCollins Tree Guide by Owen Johnson
Buy new: £11.09 / Used from: £8.99
There's no single book on trees that I'm satisfied with, but this is the best tree-spotting guide overall.
Silva: The Tree In BritainSilva: The Tree In Britain by Archie Miles
Buy new: £19.00 / Used from: £13.99
A beautiful biography of British trees and old introductions. Good on folklore, but again, lacking as a practical guide.
Forgotten Fruits: A Guide to Britain's Traditional Fruit and Vegetables, from Orange Jelly Turnips to Dan's Mistake GooseberriesForgotten Fruits: A Guide to Britain's Traditional Fruit and Vegetables, from Orange Jelly Turnips to Dan's Mistake Gooseberries by Christopher Stocks
Buy new: £13.58 / Used from: £9.99
Avoid. Don't be seduced by the cover. Highlights such forgotten varieties as Victoria, Bramley’s, Cox’s, morello, conference. Reads like an overlong newspaper article. Ok nursery list at the back.
The New Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency: The Classic Guide for Realists and DreamersThe New Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency: The Classic Guide for Realists and Dreamers by John Seymour
Buy used from: £80.00
Ending with a reassuring thing to have on your bookshelf. Break open in event civilisation collapses, break open now for huge help with the garden.
