1934. Genuinely funny and at times unbelievably risque, both Gable and Colbert eat up the screen in this on the road screwball comedy. Charm oozed off both of them...

1941. Also available in The Preston Sturgess Box Set. Wealthy Joel McCrae sets off with Veronica Lake to meet the down & outs of America and learns a thing or two along the way. Very Capra. Very Good.

1945. Shockingly real in its portrayal of alcoholism, it may be old, but it packs a punch you don't quickly forget. Brave and topical too.

1947. Rex Harrison as the ghostly salty old seadog and the lovely Gene Tierney who won't put up with his bumps in the night. An old-fashioned and deeply lovely film that spawned a TV series...

1949. My favourite of all the Ealing films and one of the best restored prints too. Guinness is God as all 8 members of the D'ascoyne family. Anarchic and brilliant.

1953. Purists will poo poo the Cameron remake (I loved it) and refer back to this British classic - but they have a point - there is something incredibly poignant about this version...

1955. Forget Freddie Kruger, if you really want to be scared then view Bob Mitchum in this Charles Laughton directed masterpiece. Dark and dirty for all the right reasons...

1957. A stage play that successfully transferred to the big screen. A jury is in a claustrophic room trying to decide on life or death for a young buck, but prejudices surface. A top drawer cast.

1958. Sensational pairing of Poitier and Curtis as the handcuffed convicts on the run - a groundbreaking film in many ways - their unfolding understanding of each other is brilliantly handled...

1963. Kubrick made some god awful films, but this is balls-up genius. The scene where Hayden tries to convince Sellers that communists are stealing our bodily fluids is both funny and frightening...

1967. As the Ray Charles opening song rings out over the credits, you know you're in the presence of real class. Steiger rightly won the Oscar, Quincy Jones for the score, but it's Poitier who blazes.
