Wondering which Mailer book to read?
The Naked and the Dead (Flamingo Modern Classics)The Naked and the Dead (Flamingo Modern Classics) by Norman Mailer
Buy used from: £0.48
I'm going to list Mailer's books chronologically. Here's his first, most famous, and probably most conventional book. Very powerful, and an amazing achievement for a 25-year old.
Barbary ShoreBarbary Shore by Norman Mailer
Buy used from: £0.16
A strange novel set in a run-down boarding house. This is an intriguing but nonetheless minor work, and for completists only.
The Deer ParkThe Deer Park by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £7.68 / Used from: £0.01
Hollywood elite lounge around a fashionable Californian resort. I don't rate this amongst his better novels.
Advertisements for MyselfAdvertisements for Myself by N Mailer
Buy new: £17.05 / Used from: £14.58
Very entertaining and provocative rag-bag of stories, essays, polemic, meditations and interviews that works well as a Mailer primer.
Deaths for the ladies, and other disasters: Being a run of poems, short poems, very short poems, and turns of prose entitled more formallyDeaths for the ladies, and other disasters: Being a run of poems, short poems, very short poems, and turns of prose entitled more formally by Norman Mailer
Hard-to-find, and not really worth the effort unless you're a completist. Proof that poetry isn't really Norman's forte.
An American Dream (Flamingo Modern Classics)An American Dream (Flamingo Modern Classics) by Norman Mailer
Buy used from: £0.01
After The Naked and The Dead, perhaps his most highly rated work of fiction. Dark, pacey, and Mailer wears his existential impulses on his sleeve.
Why are We in Vietnam? Why are We in Vietnam? by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £1.43
NOT a war novel - Vietnam is mentioned only on the final page! Instead, this is a parable concerning an Alaskan hunting trip. Short, rich in humour and offbeat slang, this is a personal favourite.
The Armies of the Night: History as a Novel / the Novel as HistoryThe Armies of the Night: History as a Novel / the Novel as History by Norman Mailer
Buy used from: £3.31
The best example of Mailer's brand of highly subjective journalism, this remains amongst his most lauded and essential non-fiction books. Terrific stuff.
Miami and the Siege of Chicago (Primus Library of Contemporary Americana)Miami and the Siege of Chicago (Primus Library of Contemporary Americana) by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £7.45 / Used from: £2.56
Much of Mailer's '60s work remains out of print. If you become a fan, try tracking down this one, or the underrated A Fire On The Moon (about the Apollo mission).
The Prisoner of SexThe Prisoner of Sex by Norman Mailer
Buy used from: £12.51
Mailer managed to become the 1970s feminist movement's unofficial Enemy No.1. Here he answers the charges - sometimes persuasively, sometimes less so.
Marilyn: Biography of Marilyn MonroeMarilyn: Biography of Marilyn Monroe by Norman Mailer
Buy used from: £0.01
There are better, if less idiosyncratic, Monroe biographies. And there are certainly better Mailer books. Glossy, a bit vapid, and not really worth the trouble.
The Fight (Penguin Modern Classics)The Fight (Penguin Modern Classics) by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.85
Along with Armies Of The Night, this remains his best non-fiction book. This is a highly accessible, gripping read - even if you know the contest's outcome!
The Executioner's SongThe Executioner's Song by Norman Mailer
Buy used from: £4.20
Is this the classic it's cracked up to be? Mailer's most self-effacing book is huge, exhaustive, and exhausting. But I actually prefer Capote's In Cold Blood. Still, it's very popular.
Ancient EveningsAncient Evenings by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £9.07 / Used from: £0.01
Ths monumental novel of early Egypt is one of his greatest achievements. Mailer's point is that a highly evolved civilisation can, indeed MUST, still be in touch with the mystical.
Tough Guys Don't DanceTough Guys Don't Dance by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.01
After Ancient Evenings, Mailer knocked off this pulp pastiche quickie. Surprisingly, it's one of his most engaging and slyly humorous novels. An underrated treat.
Harlot's GhostHarlot's Ghost by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £11.49 / Used from: £0.01
Set in the covert world of the post-war CIA, this is a middle-ranking fiction effort that offers rewards, but isn't essential.
Oswald's Tale: An American MysteryOswald's Tale: An American Mystery by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £10.00 / Used from: £0.42
Is any subject matter more tired or over-analysed? Still, Mailer brings some freshness and weight to this Oswald biography, and concludes there was no conspiracy - he acted alone.
The Gospel According to the SonThe Gospel According to the Son by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £8.99 / Used from: £0.01
Seemingly one of his least popular books, I kind of like this one. A portrait of Jesus that is vivid, distinctive - and under 250 pages long!
Picasso: Portrait of Picasso as a Young ManPicasso: Portrait of Picasso as a Young Man by Norman Mailer
Buy used from: £7.99
I confess I haven't read this study of Picasso, who Mailer obviously views as a bit of a kindred spirit. Nicely illustrated, and maybe an alternative to the John Richardson volumes on Picasso.
The Time of Our TimeThe Time of Our Time by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £14.25 / Used from: £3.19
Well, here's the whole sheband, boiled down to a single volume. But rather than this ;Greatest Hits', I suggest you sample a few of the complete books themselves.
Why are We at WarWhy are We at War by Norman Mailer
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
Here's another I haven't got round to reading yet. But I'm confident this recent (2003) account of US foreign policy is sure to be of interest.
Mailer's AmericaMailer's America by Joseph Wenke
Buy new: £25.95 / Used from: £5.51
If you want a scholarly study of Mailer's writings, I recommend two out-of-print titles. This one, from 1987...
Mankind in Barbary: The Individual and Society in the Novels of Norman MailerMankind in Barbary: The Individual and Society in the Novels of Norman Mailer by Stanley T. Gutman
Buy used from: £5.22
...and this one, from 1976. Both are pretty insightful.
The Lives of Norman Mailer: A BiographyThe Lives of Norman Mailer: A Biography by Carl E. Rollyson
Buy new: £18.99
There's been any number of Mailer biographies, most of them rubbish. This one looks like it may be half-decent, and I intend to give it a try some day.

And finally....Mailer actually directed this cheesy, campy film adaptation of his own novel. The book is great, but unfortunately the movie sucks.
