Period pieces from a vanished age
Here is an interesting collection of Sullivan's shorter choral works, mainly pieces written for ceremonial occasions. None of them are likely to turn up in a concert hall near you, but they are rarely less than enjoyable, and occasionally something akin to inspiration sets in. For simple enjoyment there is the uproarious finale of the Te Deum -- play it to some musical friends and watch their faces as the brass band strikes up "Onward Christian Soldiers" under the chorus! In a more serious mood try the atmospheric setting of "How sleeps the moonlight" from "Kenilworth", or the justly celebrated partsong "The long day closes". The performances are spirited and sympathetic, though the chorus is really too small to do justice to the grandeur (or should that be grandiosity?) of Sullivan's conceptions.
