I am amazed at the sound quality in my poor signal strength area
I recently moved from a DAB radio area to one that couldn't even get FM. And we're not talking just crackly - we're talking absolutely no reception at all on any of my DAB / FM radios - most of which cost £100+.
So I really wasn't sure that something so small for less than £20 could possibly help. But I was going scatty with no radio at home, so I gave it a go.
I had assumed all previous reviews were from generous, kind-hearted souls who love giving things 5 out of 5 (sorry everyone!).
Within 2 minutes of unpacking the radio I had set it up and tuned it to my favourite station - crystal clear and loud enough to listen to in the next room!
A fluke?
No - the same, everywhere in the house.
The wide base makes it stable on a shelf or counter top. The tuning scale is clear to read and the dials have a quality feel to them, which is rare these days on plastic components. The volume / off dial gives a nice, positive "click" when you turn it off, so you know it's really off and you're not wasting batteries.
The aerial is long and sturdy and is easily angled to fine-tune your reception.
I have only tried FM so far, but am really impressed with the sound quality, especially since I had given up on ever getting radio here.
Size-wise, it's small enough to fit in the palm of my (female) hand, but big enough to give decent sound quality, without distorting at higher volumes.
And if you want to wander around with it, without getting thumped by strangers, it has an earphone jack to allow you to hum along in public.
The only thing I could suggest to improve it would be for Roberts to include the 2 AA batteries in the pack.
This is such a good radio that I have been telling all my friends, who think I've gone loopy, but that's how excited I was to be able to get such good radio reception in a rural area - especially from something as compact as this.
I would recommend this radio for anyone who wants great reception, even in poor signal areas, in a radio small enough to sit on your kitchen windowsill, without becoming the major feature of the room.
I'm joining the 5 out of 5 brigade. :-)
Roberts R9924 Radio :)
Having recently purchased a Roberts Gemini 15 DAB Radio, and been very pleased with the unit, I was only ever going to buy a Roberts. I did a bit of research on portable radios and saw this beauty. The Roberts R9924.
The unit is truly fantastic - I know it's only a radio, but compared with other units I have tested in the past, there's just no comparison in terms of quality.
The radio is well built and sturdy. It is mainly a grey colour - but it does look good! 3 bands to choose from - and reception was great on all of them - but obviously FM has slightly better sound. The sound from the single speaker is fantastic. The aireal is quite big, this is probably why the reception is so good, but it's still pocket usable. Highly recommended!
Great for R4 (and cricket) lovers!
As a Radio 4 addict, who likes to listen while working around the house and garden, I adore these radios. So few decent LW receivers are available nowadays that these are a real find in terms of both sound quality and size.
I'm currently on my third of these little Roberts but the turnover is not due to any fault in the product - quite the reverse. Because they are so light and reception is so good I tend to take them everywhere, often to places where they should not really be taken (e.g. on boats) and treat them in a manner for which they were not designed (e.g. dropping them repeatedly from great heights)!
So if you know anyone who likes to listen to test match cricket, or uses radio to keep them company while doing housework or any job which requires them to move around, this would make a superb present.
