Amazon.co.uk Review
Clint Eastwood (making his very assured directorial debut) is a poetry-spouting stud-muffin DJ stalked by a maniacally amorous fan after a misguided one-night stand in this enjoyably schlocky, undeniably effective film about good intentions gone murderously wacky. Although many of the very '70s trappings presented here may ultimately be too dated to be taken seriously (including a very self-indulgent jazz number and a hilariously gooey seduction number between Eastwood and Donna Mills), the core premise of infatuation taken out of bounds remains uncomfortably plausible--and was influential enough to be appropriated by one of the biggest hits of the '80s. (Here's a hint--it starred Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, and a very unfortunate bunny rabbit). A well-staged and occasionally very frightening thriller worth watching for Jessica Walter's peerlessly unhinged performance alone. Frequent Eastwood collaborator Don Siegel (director of Dirty Harry, Coogan's Bluff, and The Beguiled, to name but a few) has a nice cameo as Murphy, the mustachioed, chess-playing bartender. --Andrew Wright
Synopsis
A nail-biting thriller about a California disc jockey, whose girlfriend finds it a terrifying experience when he is plagued by the unwanted, amorous advances of a beautiful, love-crazed, knife-wielding psychopath.

Play Misty For Me
I have actually watched this a few times on tv, but find the story-line very good, and I find it's one of those films you can watch over and over.
Also this film came out before a lot of other similar films e.g Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct where the female charater is the 'preditor'. I have actually visited Carmel and Monteray in California where this is set. and it is still very much like it is in the film, very pretty. Another strong factor being Clint Eastwood acting and directing this film. The film seems to take you back to a better period of time in the early 70's.(apart that is from the female stalker)
Plausible stalker movie and a fine, taut thriller
Clint takes the director's chair for the first time with 1971's Play Misty For Me, a highly watchable and plausible stalker movie. Set along the Californian coast, (actually featuring his beloved Carmel) it tells the story of a relaxed batchelor with an eye for the ladies who is also a successful local radio jock. Eastwood directs the movie with an assured touch and a good eye for the surroundings. Even if he wasn't an established movie star then this film would have been a green light to direct more movies. In fact it possibly has to be one of the most assured and successful Hollywood director debuts, it is that interesting and watchable a film. It's a cracking little story about one of the biggest dangers of being a celebrity, you sometimes get obsessive fans who won't leave you alone. There is a bit of a message about the dangers of being a womaniser as well, with the suggestion that his character has brought this situation upon himself a little by being on the look out all the time and not committed to any one woman, or that it's a sort of payback for his flighty ways and believing he can have both fame and freedom. The free and easy Eastwood is perfect for the role himself, looks like he understands his character totally, and it has to be one of his better performances. The film is genuinely scary and it is a very well made neat little thriller. Infact I don't think he's made many better movies since, even though he is a film making legend now. Has some decent extras too for Eastwood fans.
And there's more added value to the dvd
Not much has to be added to the story of this great Clint Eastwood movie. But when in doubt as whether to buy this dvd there is something that needs to be added to the product information (and which is strangely enough also not mentioned on the package itself). The dvd contains a very interesting documentary about the film made in 2001. Length: 50 minutes!
