Manufacturer's Description
Norton Save & Restore empowers you to protect the data that you care most about. With Save & Restore, you can automatically back up and recover everything on your computer quickly and easily. You get all the protection of Symantec's award-winning Norton Ghost software, plus new, faster ways to save cherished family mementos and other essential files.
In addition to all the power and security of Symantec's Norton Ghost technology, Save & Restore gives you faster ways than ever before to back up your files. In just one easy step, you can back up your entire hard-drive of data. Imagine, in one easy step. all of your digital photos, family videos, key financial records, essential computer system files, and other data can be backed-up. No more sleepless night worry about computer crashes; with Restore and Save, you can create and store your data worry-free. In fact, you can recover your system and data even when you can't restart your operating system.
To maximize space and save time, Restore and Save makes incremental backups and also makes backups on the fly, without restarting your system. You can back up your data to almost any media, including CDR/RW and DVD+-R/RW drives, USB and FireWire (IEEE 1394) external storage devices, and Iomega Zip and Jaz drives.
A one-step setup wizard automatically creates an initial backup schedule based on your computer's storage devices and system settings, and the software then automatically monitors and optimizes backup disk space. You can also program it to trigger backups on key events, such as new program installations or user logins. And for added security, your backups are encrypted, giving you even more comfort knowing that your data is safe.
While Restore and Save builds on many of the same features found in Norton Ghost 10.0, there are several significant enhancements that make this a must-have application for anyone who cares about their data. For instance, a file and folder back up feature lets you choose specific files and folders to save, rather than having to save an entire drive. Restore and Save can also protects all files of a certain type (such as photos or documents) by finding and backing up the exact file types you indicate. The software also features a single easy-to-use interface, thanks to its integration with Norton Protection Center console, that makes managing your Norton security applications easier than ever. And lastly, and perhaps most importantly, an "Outbreak Alert" trigger automatically initiates a back up when Norton Internet Security 2006 is notified about a virus or worm outbreak. (This feature requires the installation of Norton Internet Security 2006, which is sold separately.)
Customer Reviews
Nice product, shame about the bugs and support
In general, Save and Restore is very good. It will easily backup around 50GB of data to my NAS in a couple of hours. I've got it set to create incremental backups every hour. These work very well and don't noticeably impact the performance of the system.
However, it has some very annoying bugs:
1) The Backup Wizard won't let me alter the schedule for a backup. There are other ways to get to this, but why doesn't the edit button work?
2) I have configured hourly backups during the day with weekly creation of a new recovery set. The new recovery sets seem to be created at random, with a good few weeks between them - about a month in one case.
3) The restore CD (once it finally boots) doesn't seem to allow easy authentication of network shares - I have to go through a long process to get to a point where I can log in to the NAS before I can see the recovery set.
I've tried to get in touch with "Technical Support". My first on-line support request has not been answered (submitted about three months back). The second was closed by sending me a "read the FAQ's" response after about two months.
I've also tried phone support, but after spending 45 minutes being transfered around different departments and left in queues, I gave up.
Good, but flawed
I was expecting this to be an excellent product after using Norton Ghost 2003. Unfortuantely, at the moment it has a bug. It was unable to detect my Pioneer 111D drive as a writable medium, meaning it was no use for backing up images. It was able to store an image on my external USB hard drive. I'm currently waiting for a bugfix, and I am most disappointed that Symantec's technical support have not replied to my support request. On the plus side, if it supports your drive(s) it appears to do what it should.
Save & Restore
The inconspicuous title of this product hides the many features and flexibilities it has to offer.
If you ever needed a backup other than a harddisk image you will love Save & Restore. It allows you to create backups of selected files or folders, use filters, schedule backups etc.
You can freely chose where to save your archives, whether to encrypt them and select full or incremental backups.
Restoring files is just as easy, either in full or for individual files using the browser that comes with the software.
