Effortless, cheap rapid storage
This arrived very promptly despite choosing free supersaver delivery. Ordered Sunday evening, arrived Thursday. Amazon had as good a price as I could find - and the free delivery swung the decision for me.
It's a complete breeze to use - plug it in to the power then your computer (all cables provided) and it appears as a drive in Windows (XP). Mac users it's almost as simple but you need to perform an extra step - formatting the disk (very straightforward). Basically within about 15 minutes of the parcel arriving I was transferring my photos onto this drive. It's extremely good value high performance storage (the 16Mb cache will help performance).
This disk is a great way of providing additional storage - particularly for media (photos, music, video). It also looks like an external drive will be useful to store information on during migration to Windows Vista if you plan to do this. As a backup device it's useful but only really effective if you keep it separately from your computer between backups.
It's quite a large unit - not suitable for portable storage. It comes with an external power supply and a USB2 cable (this unit and cable will work through USB1 but with much slower performance). There's a quickstart guide in the box; manuals are online.
The drive comes ready formatted for Windows use (though it seems to have a large, hidden, "system" folder on it so I'm tempted to reformat to get rid of this... once I've checked the support...) The unit is compatible with Macs but Apple users, you'd have to reformat it when you plug it in, before you can store stuff on it.
Note that due to conversion factors and terminology used, this unit only actually stores about 300Gb of data (there is a mathematical explanation of this but it's just a lame excuse for providing slightly less storage than it says on the box in my view).
Apart from the size, the only other drawback is that it does make a bit of vibration noise when placed on a wooden shelf - it might be useful to put the unit on something to dampen the vibration. I'm going to try an old mouse mat :)
excellent - saved me from digital hell
I bought this in September - it's very quiet... haven't had any problems with vibration, but then I use this only as a back-up hard drive. It worked straight out of the box, was immediately recognised by XP ... and it saved my digital life, because one hour after doing the most recent back-up my main internal hard disk died a sudden death.
Thanks to the Maxtor hard disk I managed to restore all my documents, addressbook, pictures etc. Digital disaster averted ... just!
Poor Maxtor Reliability....again
I bought this item back in September '06 and initial installation and operation was easy. I was hesitant about buying Maxtor because I'd read in several places that their reliability wasn't great. I used it for ghosting my C: drive and backup, fortunately.
The drive recently developed a fault where it was unrecognisable to Windows XP. I was initially able to overcome this by sorting out the USB connection in Device Manager and then re-naming and reformatting the dive through disk manager. However every time I used error checking to look at what was wrong with the disk it crashed and became unrecognisable again.
Looking on the web, there's several people who've had this issue with this drive and had to return it.
The good news is that Amazon.co.uk have been excellent and agreed to a full refund. So well done Amazon and please try harder, Maxtor. I'm off to buy a Western Digital with my refund. I suppose you get what you pay for.
