Great walks for the whole family
We've done about 5 or 6 of these walks and almost all have been a great success. Particularly like Friday Street and Thursley Bog. Very clear directions, just the right length for our children. Most of the ones we have done haven't been suitable for pushchairs so I would recommend this book to people whose children are past that stage unless you are prepared to carry them.
Great walks but not with a buggy!
I first reviewed this book a few weeks ago after doing two of the walks and my review was quite negative (I have copied it at the bottom of this review). I now think I need to change this review.
The main problem was that the walks can definitely not be done with a pushchair. Since this review we have bought a baby back carrier and tried more walks. We have loved them! Friday street is absolutely lovely. The one going up to St Martha's church is quite challenging (especially carrying our son in the baby carrier), but the view at the top is amazing.
Initial review:
We have so far done two walks from this book but I don't think we will try any new ones.
Walk 1 (New Haw): the first half of the walk was not very nice. Walking along electric posts is not my idea of nice scenery. This walk is supposed to be suitable for a pushchair. I am not sure the author has tried to go over two stiles with a pushchair. The worst thing is that between the two stiles is a railway that you have to cross. I was not happy about that at all!
Walk 2 (Shere): Shere is a beautiful village and the walk itself is nice. The problem, again, is that you cannot actually do it with a pushchair. One path is way too narrow. Luckily I first did the walk with friends and without my son.
One good point about this book: the directions are extremely clear, easy to follow and accurate.
Lovely walks
So far, we have only done a few of the walks in this book with our 16 month old and we're already keen to get the books for Sussex.
The locations are easy to find and parking details have been accurate. The walks themselves have resulted in us having some rather magical Sunday morning outings amongst some stunning scenery. Our boy is in a back carry-pack and so we've not searched out the buggy friendly walks. We have had to negotiate a few steep, muddy slopes - all adding to the fun! We've also learnt a fair bit about the local history.
Yes, I would definitely recommend this book as a means to get you out and exploring some wonderful countryside. The routes have never been busy, but on the occasion that we have met other families, they too have had the book in hand.
