Inspirational5
Tower blocks have a deservedly bad name, because of the shoddy materials they were built from. But Pevsner gives an inspirational guide to why the people who dreamt them up are important, and what they were trying to achieve. But he also places them amidst a constantly evolving history which he encapsulates without being pretentious or preachy. His descriptions of buildings that might at first appear dry to the layman are colourful, evocative and full of flavour. The scope of this book is huge and it touches only the pinnacles of European creativity. But it makes architecture a vibrant art with relevance to humanity throughout the ages. Reading the words on English architecture, in particular, of this refugee from Hitler, will change your views of the buildings that surround you. He enables the reader to see the world through new eyes.
