A superb analysis of architecture
This book will enlighten you and make you look at buildings afresh. Written in the early 1960's when Robert Venturi had little work, and therefore spare time, it followed on from his thesis studies and ideas gathered while a Rome scholar. If you are considering a serious study of architecture this is a must read. It contains his thoughts on some of his early work, including his mother's house and the beach house, unfortunately never built. Venturi and his wife and partner, Denise Scott-Brown designed the Sainsbury wing of the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square - the one design of many that accepted that this was an extension to the National Gallery - rather than letting the tail wag the dog (see Richard Rogers design.)
