Synopsis
With this volume Massimo Vitali enlarges the scope of his survey and includes beaches and discos from all around the world - and beside some skiing resorts and swimming pools. Vitali's large-scale, color images apply a topographical clarity and wealth of detail to the rites and rituals of modern leisure seldom seen before. Perhaps it is his experience of working in both the mediums of photography and film that produces this mixture of recognition and unfamiliarity that shifts the image from documentary realism towards the surreal. Combining the minute detail of view camera photography and the fascination with the world of appearances and their undecidability, Vitali's images share an aesthetic and occasionally specific subject matter with the work of Andreas Gursky, but in his work, figure and environment cohabit the space of the image and there is less of a tendency towards a metaphysical reading.
