Customer Reviews
Bolan at his best
What a wonderful collection. Ok many fans will say many of these BBC recordings have been released before which they have on separate CD collections over the years. Difference is Mark Paytrees not only has written the book that comes with this but reseached, tracked down better recorded versions & added many from BBC list that at first seemed lost forever. I have original recorded releases & can say much has been cleaned up only a few now have DJs talking over in fact very few. I sat & listened to these & thought how great Marc was to record for BBC & make tracks sound like straight from his discs at the time. It is only when you listen & hear some lyrics changes you remember these are BBC studio sessons. I loved the various versions of Elemental Child with guitar solo's never being the same some are mind blowing. What is also on this 3 disc box set is the BBC concert in France in two parts & you swear it was not live till they clap at the end as sound is so good. I believe this is fantasic to have in any fans collection of course you have to have loved Marc's work in Tyrannosaurus Rex too to buy this but even these sessons are so different to the original records. Worth every penny to any fan
Beeb Bop
We have heard it all before. We have read it all before but it has never sounded so good as this. A well packaged 3 cd box with photo & text booklet. Care and attention has gone into the production of this set of Bolan's BBC radio recordings and at an affordable price, its well worth adding it to any Bolanites collection or just as entertaining to the uninitiated.
The Definitive BBC Collection
Beginning with "Across the Airwaves" in 1983, there have been several packages and repackages of Bolan's notable BBC sessions. This 3 disk collection includes everything on that first one; everything on Tyrannosaurus Rex - "BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert" (1993), T-Tex - "The Peel Session" (1994) and Tyrannosaurus Rex & T-Rex - "A BBC History" (1996). However the last nine tracks on disk 2 of T-Rex - "The BBC Recordings 1970-1976" (1997) are not included. There is some justification for this in that they were not really put together in the same spirit as those earlier sessions. Using, as they do, various pre-recorded backing tracks; they are only of interest to the die hard fan or completist, in my opinion.
This package is very nicely put together and charts Bolan's musical development from not long before the first Tyrannosaurus Rex Album to the height of his poularity in 1971. While there are the occasional moments wincingly twee or pretentious to the modern ear (we are talking 1967 to 1969 here!) and there are only so many times anyone would want to hear extended versions of "The Wizard"; this collection shows Bolan to be a highly imaginitive artist, a great songwriter and a very competant performer. It has given me many hours of pleasure.
It also makes a great partner to "Bowie at the Beeb": try spending a lazy afternoon alternating between the two collections.
