A brilliant re telling of the Bolan story
This is the DVD of one the television programmes which was broadcast to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Marc Bolan's death (this is the good one, not the pretty dreadful, spurious & lazily constructed one on ITV which trawled up the so called scandalous side of the Bolan saga - shame on that particular production team for the unsavoury accusations they allowed to be thrown about, with Marc unable to defend himself)
The DVD tells the story of Marc's life & his ascent to fame, his dip in fortune (due to a combination of excessive cocaine & champagne consumption, weight gain, physical & mental exhaustion,a change in musical direction & a rabid media) & his rebirth on the come back trail, as he became father to Rolan, Godfather to punk, lost the weight, cleaned up his act & released some quality music.
Some really good interviews & reminisces from Marc's brother, Gloria Jones (his partner & mother of Rolan), Tony Visconti (his producer in the "glory days"), his friend Steve Harley (of Cockney Rebel fame), Marc Almond, publicist & friend (the quaintly barmy) BP Fallon & ex T.Rex bass player, Herbie Flowers (as well as fellow members of John's Children & a number of other luminaries & Bolan associates) - thankfully there is no sign of Simon Napier Bell on this one !!
Interspersed with excerpts of interviews, performances & stunning still photos - it's the real deal.
The extras, with extended interviews from Marc's friends are great but the "in the studio" section with Visconti, exploring how he & Marc laid down the T.Rex "sound" are truly excellent.
The best documentary on Bolan since "Dandy" (see the DVD "T.Rex on TV" for that little gem) - worth every penny.
Space Boss
At last a Biography of Marc that actually does him justice. Wether a fan or the uninitiated this at last is the one place to go to get a real understanding of Marc and his music. As well as classic footage there is also some wonderfull newly discovered stuff from every stage of his life and career. This is the one ..
Interesting documentary
I saw this on TV recently and found it to be very insightful. I didn't know a lot about Marc Bolan, but this documentary gives a really good view of his life and inspirations.
