Tantra has been called the cult of ecstasy and is associated with sexual mysticism. However, even in those Tantric systems which place the greatest emphasis on harnessing sexual energy, this is just one aspect of a complex, working meditation.

Tantra
In the hindu tradition, the esoteric practice of Tantra regards sexual energy as a path to spiritual wisdom. For more than two thousand years, India has produced a wealth of erotic literature and art, much of which has been accessible only to Tantric initiates. While a few Tantric texts such as the Kama Sutra and the Ananga Ranga have become famous over the centuries, there are numerous other manuals and erotic works that are not so well known in the West, including the Koka Shastra, the Love Teachings of Rati, and the exquisite writings of Indian authors Amaru and Mayura.
Drawing on these and a number of other works, Indra Sinha has brought together in this one volume a rare collection of erotic and Tantric literature from the classical, medieval and modern periods. The texts are accompanied by extensive commentary and lavishly illustrated with a unique collection of paintings, many of whuch had until now been reserved for ritual purposes. Together, text and art comprise a two thousand-year-old guide to the spiritual and erotic mysteries of Tantra.
