Capturing the quirk and candor of Napoleon Dynamite and That 70's Show, Dorian Blues contemplates the tortures of high school as Dorian, resident outcast and butt of all "fag" jokes, makes his way through the perils of adolescence. But things finally click when the teen realizes that he's gay. Before his Nixon-loving father can give him the conservative boot, Dorian is off to bright lights of New York City for a whirlwind of exciting firsts - S&M clubs, coffee bars and attractive men. But to Dorian's dismay, this world may prove to be as maddening as the one he's left behind.

Synopsis
First-time director Tennyson Bardwell serves up a fresh entry in the coming out/coming of age genre with this movingly funny tale of a young man exploring his sexuality in the face of judgmental parents, siblings, and classmates. Dorian Lagatos (Michael McMillian) is just finishing high school, where his classmates suspect he's gay but generally ignore him. Daunted by his arch-conservative father, Dorian suppresses his urges and pursues the status quo, planning to escape to college in New York. But suddenly, with the assistance of a therapist, a priest, and a momentous first boyfriend, Dorian comes into his own--and comes out to his family, his friends, and the world.

Finally, a 'coming'out' movie to be proud of!
Dorian Blues is that rare beast in gay-cinema - an enjoyable, warm, funny and well-made movie that tackles the tried-and-tested coming out of the closet narrative with a fresh approach. The film centes around Dorian as he tackles high school and home-life while taking his first steps to embracing his sexuality. Aided by his hot-jock brother and suffocated by his dominerring father the results are both hilarious and heart-breaking in equal measure. Like a cross between Napoloen Dynamite and My So Called Life, Dorian Blues is a fantastic entry into the gay cinema vault!

This is Fabulous! I mean Awesome! O Stuff it - it's Fabulous!
Sweet and endearing coming of age drama that is just a pleasure to watch! Michael Mcmillan plays the lanky, geeky Dorian perfectly and puts in such a sweet performance I found myself watching it again just to see his cute face! I know!
Witty narration and laugh out loud one liners more than keep this film a cut above others in its genre as it follows Dorian's own acceptance of his sexuality through to the coming out to his father. The journey betwixt beset by numerous meetings to a psychiatrist and subsequent "conversations" to a dummy in the role of dad, and vain attempts to straighten himself out. He does this by enlisting the help of his brother, Nicky.

Nicky trains him to favour words such as "Awesome" over such camp desirables as "Fabulous" (`cause straight men never say "fabulous"') and teaching him to fight "mano-a-mano", which ends up with Dorian suffering mild concussion. Hilarious!
Nicky-cum-pimp then sets Dorian up with a strip-club dancer and an awkward liaison turns into a night full of singing and dancing! Every gay mans' dream!
So try as he might Dorian keeps coming back to the fact that he is gay and after these attempts fail he resolves to tell his Dad. Dad (obnoxious know-it-all who considers his opinion as gospel) has the typical response and throws poor Dor out..

We then follow Dorian on his exploits in New York - making friends - finding lovers. What's great about this film is once you think everything is going great quite literally the next scene will have it all collapse and see poor Dorian trying to cope with the latest tragedy.

There're many reason to watch this film but I think chief amongst them is the relationship between Dorian and Nicky as it's wonderfully portrayed and feels authentic. Right from the beginning, when Dorian is introducing us to his family, he gets to Nicky (buff) and we see him in a tight T getting a drink from the fridge. Just when he's about to walk off he's arrested by Dorian berating: "Hold on, Nick - let 'em take you in", followed by some "manly" posses and cheesy smiles. Class! It's this great atmosphere that permeates the whole film making it a pleasure to watch again and again and again...

Funny, endearing and witty with some stark flashes of melancholy, I could not - if you are still undecided - recommend this movie highly enough. A rare gem in its genre that should not be missed...
