Three cheers for Robert Lewis! Finally a fathers roadmap!
Lewis has written a book that should be handed down from father to son, father to son, father to son... The similar relationships between knighthood and the men God wants us to be is amazing. By using himself and his sons as the model for this book we the reader get some insight as to how to proceed with the actions he lays out for us. If I could choose only one book to use as guide for raising my sons, this would be it.
good book - great starting point
I bought this book for my husband, as he loves the ideals of the Medieval Knight, and is determined to be a good father - the title seemed to bring these 2 loves together. He doesn't like to read much, so I have read it, and shared many of the ideas with him.
The practical advice is great, really causes you to think about how you can provide a clear path for your boys. BUT much of the 'religious' aspect was, to me, very difficult to read. I am an active Christian, with religion second only to my family, but I found Robert Lewis' interpretations to be at odds with my beliefs. However, ignoring those places where he tries to interpret different areas of the bible, and focusing only the direct biblical quotes, the religious basis is just fine.
As far as Robert Lewis' understanding of what a Man should be, how he should act, and the ideals and values he should hold - fantastic. The idea that ceremony can help to drive home the messages you want to teach, felt new, although it's a proven fact. Our son is not 2 yrs old yet, but we have already begun to think about at what ages we will 'formally' introduce him to the ideals of manhood, what ceremonies we might invent for him, how we can make his journey fun, memorable, and hopefully effective.
Definitely worth a read.
Most moving and useful book I've read other than the Bible.
I cannot say enough about Raising a Modern-Day Knight. I have already started utilizing the concepts and ideas provided. The impact has been tremendous! I will be leading a Sunday School class on this book starting in May. All I can say is, "Read it!"
