A stunning bit of kit
Having been wondering how to back-up all my laptop data & mp3 files easily, I finally plunged for the 400Gb Freecom Hard Drive. I've only had it a few days, but I'm already highly impressed.
Firstly, it was simple to set up: the software installed quickly and easily, and the HD was recognised and worked perfectly the first time it was connected to the laptop.
There are two handy bits of software: one, which appears as "Freecom Sync" on the HD, automatically checks that your PC and the Freecom HD have the same files in selected folders (and updates as necessary); the back-up utility automatically checks your PC for specified types of files (e.g. .doc files) and backs them up to the Freecom HD. And very quickly, at that.
Not only that, but it was also a piece of cake to back-up all my 20Gb Zen Touch tracks to the Freecom HD.
I worked out that, even at a high bitrate (192kbps), I can get 4000 albums on this HD; that works out at 0.00 pence per album.
400GB for £120
I got this to back up all my DV films to tape. Out of the box it looks excellent in that it it is small. A third smaller than WD 160GB external drive I bought last month. It is also very quiet, due to no fan, and after 4 hours of writing data continuously it got a little warm but nothing to be concerned about. Only niggle - the WD drive has the on/off on the front....which is much more sensible....and I wish I had bought the Freecom originally as my WD drive is redundant now!
Have written 22 DV tapes in full AVI therefore 13GB per tape. The drive has successfully backed them up all up at about 30 mins / 13 GB. Worked on XP out-of-the-box.
As long as it does not crash (and it has not yet) I am very pleased.
Great value, no probs so far
I do a lot of commuting between Sheffield and London to record with my band. As the group's in-house recording engineer I need to get the recordings back to Sheffield for mixing on a regular basis.
This little baby is the perfect solution. It is small, very very quiet (in fact silent most of the time), has excellent build quality, is quite heavy and has 4 rubber feet, which means vibrations are not an issue.
I'm not very PC-literate so I don't know the benefits of different formating systems, but I have had no issues at all - my average project file is under 2 gig.
It is also quite fast. I dragged a folder containing about 80 gig of files onto the drive the day I got it, and it took maybe 40-50 minutes or so, which for that much data is very acceptable.
Highly recommended.
