DVD Description

The Darling Buds Of May - Complete Series DVD contains six discs and includes all episodes from the ITV family drama. Based on the books by H. E. Bates, the series--directed by David Giles and Rodney Bennett--was adapted for film by Richard Bates (the late author's son), together with Bob Larbey. Starring Catherine Zeta Jones in her breakthrough role as Mariette Larkin, plus David Jason and Pam Ferris as Pop and Ma Larkin respectively, the show follows the idyllic and splendour-filled lives of the Larkin family in the apple-blossomed Kent countryside.

Synopsis

The Darling Buds Of May is a family drama series which presents the Larkin family as they celebrate love, romance and family life in the idyllic British countryside. Despite never paying their bills, the Larkins manage to live in considerable comfort and affluence on their 22-acre property in Kent.

Great Set, But Flawed4
This is a great set containing six discs of the entire series. Disc 1 has an audio commentary, which reveals some interesting facts such as "Ma Larkin" actually being a vegetarian in real life and "Charlie's" hair being dyed.
The only downer for me is the fact that the shows are spliced together. Being a completist I have to admit to being disappointed, but by the third disc however, it's like they gave up and we suddenly revert to a 2 part episode.
Still, it's worth every penny.

A feelgood, family friendly classic series5
The Darling Buds of May is a fantastic series featuring David Jason at his typical best. The stories have a real feel good factor about them incorporating a mixture of happiness, humour and fun. David Jason's portrayal as 'Pop Larkin' is superb, particularly during the dialogue scenes with Pam Ferris as 'Ma Larkin' and his interaction with some of the other supporting characters Edith Pilchester and "the General".

A particular highlight for me is the episode where the Larkin's take a holiday in France, Pop is mistaken as an English Lord; and ends with an impromptu party to mark the wedding anniversary of Charlie and Mariette.

If you're looking for some good family friendly drama you can't go far wrong than with the Larkins in "The Darling Buds of May".

OH TO BE IN ENGLAND5
Living in Africa can have its downfalls, one is I missed the T.V. release but we did get it eventually and wow was it worth the wait. David Jason was born for the part of Pop and Pam Ferris is the only choice as Ma. Catherine Zeta Jones and Philip Franks certainly give 100% as do the supporting cast. Life with the Larkins is a gentle stroll down memory lane and their genuine enthusiasm for their parts shines through in every episode. If H.E. Bates himself had done the casting I don`t think a single actor would have been changed, everyone is perfik
