Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Frasier's fourth season was mostly about relationships. Niles (David Hyde Pierce), now separated from Maris, is back on the market like his bachelor brother, Frasier (Kelsey Grammer). That's great when the pair goes to a cabin with a pair of fetching women (Megan Mullaly, later of Will and Grace, and Lisa Darr), but Niles is never able to completely dispel his attachment to his suffocating wife... or to Daphne (Jane Leeves). His obsession with the latter gets an immediate burst in the season's first episode, in which he has to masquerade as Daphne's husband, then later comes to a head when she appears at his apartment door asking to stay the night. The boys have the usual disputes with their father (John Mahoney), including their disdain for the former cop's new girlfriend, Sherry (Marsha Mason), the boisterous, banjo-twangin', "gotcha"-playing bartender who would remain a regular cast member through the end of the series. Ex-wife Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) makes her annual appearance, this time when she and Frasier try to get Frederick into an exclusive prep school. And the title character? As much as Frasier teases his producer Roz (Peri Gilpin) about her dating habits, he himself is lonely, leading him to a memorable airport encounter with guest star Linda Hamilton and a season finale that proves a kind of a harbinger to the series' final episode. This season made Frasier a perfect four-for-four at the Emmys, winning its fourth consecutive award for Outstanding Comedy Series. Unlike previous seasons, this DVD set has no bonus features. --David Horiuchi

Synopsis
With its witty dialogue, sophisticated character development, and classic slapstick situations, FRASIER is a prime example of television comedy at its finest. Centred around pompous psychiatrist Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) and his call-in radio show in Seattle, the series' brilliant ensemble cast includes his prim and proper brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), their gruff retired-cop father Martin (John Mahoney), live-in home care assistant Daphne (Jane Leeves), brassy radio producer Roz (Teri Gilpin), and a charismatic Jack Russell terrier named Eddie. This collection includes all 23 episodes of the show's award-winning fourth series, which features guest appearances by Bebe Neuwirth, Marsha Mason, John Cusack, Megan Mullally, and James Earl Jones.

Sublime comedy5
For some reason I never got in to Frasier when it was orignally shown - it seemed very 'middle aged'. But now I am middle aged myself the scales have fallen from my eyes and I am a real fan.

This has to be one of the best Frasier seasons ever. I particularly like the character of Niles, who really shines here. Freshly separated from his ghastly wife Maris, his relationship with Daphne takes on a new poignancy which is exploited to great comic effect in episodes like 'Mixed Doubles'. The wonderful Lilith features in 'A Lilith Thanksgiving' and Frasier's blood-sucking agent Bebe pops up a couple of times too. Virtually every episode is a beautifully crafted classic and as Frasier gets himself into all manner of excrutiatingly embarrassing situations you can see the influence on shows like 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'.

Arguably the best season...and that's really saying something!5
Tne fourth season of 'Frasier' probably gets my vote as the best (though the first seven all have qualities that provide a convincing counter to this argument). The episodes are consistently strong, and filled with the brilliant farce and inspired word-play that makes 'Frasier' such essential comedy. Surely 'Ham Radio' and 'Three Dates and a Breakup' have to be among the show's finest moments and the cast exude energy and spark off each other as well as they have ever done. From the season opener with Daphne passing Niles off as her husband to deter a former boyfriend (incidentally, Clive has the strangest Manchester accent I've ever heard-until I saw Simon that is) to the genuinely touching finale that sees Frasier lose in love once again, this is truly satisfying stuff.

Great to re-visit 'Frasier' in its prime here and you should quickly follow up this purchase with Seasons 5 and 6.

Truly a remarkable sitcom5
This sitcom just seems to get better and better. Excellent plots and storylines and the best thing about Frasier is not just the great comedy sketches but its more hidden agender of problems that sometime in our lives we come across and ideally how we can try to cope with them. Friends has situations like this in some episodes but Frasier covers a much more diverse range and gives an excellent approach to sitcom story writing.

Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce (not forgetting the rest of the cast!) interact really well together with hilarious (but well thought out) gags, situations, and slipups.

Very eagerly awaiting future seasons on region 2 encoding.
