BIG THING -- I DON T WANT YOUR LOVE -- HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF -- DO YOU BELIEVE IN SHAME? -- MAXIMUM BIG -- SOME LIKE IT HOT -- ALL SHE WANTS IS -- PLANET EARTH -- PALOMINO -- VIEW TO A KILL -- THE EDGE OF AMERICA -- SKIN TRADE -- GIRLS ON FILM -- NOTORIOUS -- IS THERE SOMETHING I SHOULD KNOW? -- SAVE A PRAYER -- GET IT ON -- THE REFLEX -- RIO -- recorded at Tokyo Dome, Japan, February 22, 1989 Even if the English kings of the New Romantic Duran Duran have been active in the pop business for three decades it is undeniable that the ensemble was on the highlight of its career during the 80s.The coronation of their popularity came for sure in 1985 when the band was requested to write the soundtrack for the Bond movie A View To A Kill . The result: The only ever 007 song that was a number one album hit in the US charts was the Duran Duran composition. However even more impressing than numbers (70 Million sold albums) is the way they succeeded this success: their unique ability to connect pop music, arts and fashion with matchless stylistic confi dence and trust on their own fl air. This enabled the band boundless, generationspanning and lasting popularity. It s thanks to them that video clips became an important tool for bands to present themselves and to profi le because beforehand it was simply a nice marketing gimmick. Their impact and infl uence was to such an enormous extent that the Rolling Stone magazine named the Britons - in the style of the Beatles with the nickname Fab Five . The DVD documents the band as funky Glam Rock combo as well as their transformation into a high-tech Pop band with highly commercial demand. All this can be seen in the legendary Tokyo Dome Simon Le Bon (vocals), Nick Rhodes (keyboards), John Taylor (bass), Warren Cuccurullo (guitar), Sterling Campbell (drums), Stan Harrison (horns), Spike Edney (keyboards & trombone), Melanie Redmond (backing vocals), Jacqui Copland (backing vocals) DVD-5 Video Dolby Digital 2.0 NTSC 4:3 Regional Code: All Total Running: 89 minutes

Customer Reviews

Terrible PQ, mastered from VHS .....2
Although its nice to have an official video from the era, picture quality is terrible and sound is fair.
This is no better than a mediocre VHS-Tape. Better watch it on the PC in a window ....

Maximum Big Surprise4
I didn't really know what to expect from this DVD - what with it not being an official UK release and having already been spoilt rotten by the superior quality sound & vision of the `Live in London' DVD. The fact that it is a concert from 1989 and the cover photo is from 1980 wasn't a good sign. Indeed, at the start of the concert I thought "uh-oh, bootleg quality", but the camerawork quickly improved and the sound was pretty good, although only in measly 2.0 (and the song title graphics look like they were drawn on in crayon !).

The main interest for me was the fact that this concert contains a lot of songs from the `Big Thing' album, and this is the only source (bootlegs aside) that has live versions of these tracks. How would the high production values and experimental nature of the album translate to a live setting ? The answer is - pretty darn well. A few tracks are just funky mash-ups (Election Day-Some Like it Hot-Planet Earth) but Simon's voice holds up fairly well (despite the odd Live Aid-A View to a Kill moment) and even his horrendous lime jacket and Warren's flowery leggings can't detract from what is a really good performance.

So - definitely worth around 8 quid of any Durannie's money, if for no other reason than to hear a selection of songs from one of their best albums being played live which are not available anywhere else and not likely to be again.
