When Milly is late for a vital interview on a sweltering day, casting agent Jean-Luc Cartier pours her some water and holds the glass to her lips. When the water soaks her blouse he instructs her to take it off. Milly is embarrassed but curious. As Milly strips off her clothes, not only her shapely body, but also her deepest nature, is slowly uncovered. Jean-Luc puts her over his knee. He spanks her bottom and her virgin orgasm awakens her to the mysteries of discipline. Milly embark upon an erotic journey from convent school to a black magic coven in the heart of Cambridge academia, to the secret world of fetishism and bondage on the dark side of the movie camera.

From the Back Cover
I had known the moment I had seen the maid's uniform in the cupboard that the time would come when I took it off for Dr Goetz and, now that I had done so, I felt a sense of liberation, a sense that I had obeyed my own instincts. I had not taken the uniform off for him. I had taken it off for me. With the right words, the right conditions, girls want to obey. And those men who understand that can take girls with the right attitude to the extremes of their true potential.
I looked back at Dr Goetz and our eyes met.

Milly is embarrassed but curious. As Milly strips off her clothes, more than her shapely body is uncovered - her deepest nature is revealed.

'Copious amounts of eroticism to keep the fires burning in more places than one'
Being a Girl follows the first few tentative steps of Milly into the world of eroticism and film. She's young but surprisingly in touch with her body for one at such an early stage in her sexual development (she's a virgin) and she is also posessed of an innocent quality which could be said to be endearing. With this combination Ms Thurlow succeeds in creating a 'hook' in an important section of the novel.
As with her previous novel, Ms Thurlow places her characters within sexual acts and situations that teeter on the fringes of what is considered acceptable in society. I do admire authors who are willing to cross that line of conventionality; to bring our attention to other aspects of sexual lifestyles in existence and maybe introduce us to alternative forms of pleasure.
I can't help but feel jealous of some of the protagonist's upbringing, though ;) If we'd all had the opportunities presented to Milly maybe the world would be a more open and accepting place with regards to sexuality.
So, in summary, Being a Girl is a well written novel with copious amounts of eroticism to keep the fires burning in more places than one. I look forward to future offerings from this feisty author.
This book should carry a health warning
I recommend that you wear well insulated gloves when you pick up Chloe Thurlow's new novel. In addition to discovering what naughty girls get up to in their spare time, the reader gets some illuminating insights into the film industry. Wonderfully written, as you would expect, but older readers really ought to be sure that their health insurance is paid up.
Get ready for a cold shower...
Chloe Thurlow excites male readers and incites female readers in her second book, following the young female narrator's sexual journey from its nascency and pubescent awakenings to it fully fledged, handcuffs on tight, maturity.
This is the Bildungsroman if told by Anais Nin; written in a true language of the senses. Thurlow brings her unique female perceptions to a genre so dominated by masculine fantasy rather than much-needed female reflection and this is a breath of fresh air indeed. The vibrant and impassioned prose is arousing both to the libido and the literary critic.
Highly recommended.
