Dr Iain Corness fell in love with Thailand on a holiday in 1975, and finally managed to move there permanently in 1997. As a settled farang, or foreigner, he enjoys a unique perspective on Thai life and all its eccentricities; looking in from the outside while also getting to see the things most foreigners don't. His stories and anecdotes are full of the joys of life, and celebrate this exotic and exciting land in all its glory with painfully funny observations. From a date with a fortune teller to tales of a reincarnated squid, Corness revels in the chaos and charm of 'the only country where you can be run over by a shop.' This is a book to be enjoyed by tourists and Thais alike.

'Not only does Dr Iain see the things that make up Thailand, but he experiences them, bringing up unseen aspects in a very humorous way.'

Thailand Farang
Have to say I loved this book, made me lol at times but what gets me the most is the way "The Doc" looks at life with good humour and "This is Thailand" without getting jaded.I'm 45 years old and have decided when I grow up I want to be just like "The Doc" I'm giving this book 5 stars and should be noted as a "must read" if going to the land of smiles...
very dissapointed
i have read most books on thailand by expats and i can say that this is one of the most dissapointing, i failed to laugh at any of the writers attempts at humour, i was also abit shocked when he started talking about the bar girls in Pattaya and saying how all they are interested in is your money and what have you, yet he himself has a wife only half his age and constantly remarks throughout the book about how much he has to keep giving her money and providing things for her.
i found him to be very cynical and basically unfunny, he hasn't really got anything to say in the book of any importance apart from his own opinions on things which i mostly didn't agree with, and most chapters he just rambles on about his own career as a docter and what not, in fact about half of the book he doesn't even talk about Thailand.
don't waste you time with this, there are many good books out there about expats living in Thailand, don't waste your money on this, you will be bored.
Could have been better!
I have read much better travel books. This was mildly funny and interesting but certainly didn't captivate me. With Thailand being such a wonderful, diverse country I would have expected more.
